NUMBER 7 Stanford (7-2, 3-1 Pac-10) completed a two-day sweep of its Los Angeles opponents here this afternoon at the Cardinal Avery Aquatics Complex — racing to a 167-133 Pac-10 dual-meet victory over No. 4 USC (4-3, 2-2 Pac-10).

Cardinal froshwoman Kristen Caverly, national prep record-holder in the 200 IM , won three individual events and the Cardinal swept the two relay events (400 medley-free) to ensure the victory.

Stanford thus completes the home part of its schedule with a 5-1 record. The Cardinal has only Bay Area rival Cal remaining, a meet that will be swum in two weeks — commencing at high noon — in Cal's Spieker Aquatics Complex. (And a meet for which SwimInfo.com West Coast correspondent Bill Bell will be present in glorious living black and white!)

Cardinal junior Tara Kirk continued her dominance in the breaststrokes, sweeping the 100-200, while sophomore Lacey Boutwell was winner in the 50-100 frees.

Stanford has now won 21 of its last 23 dual meets and is one of three Pac-10 teams with a 3-1 conference record with one regular season meet remaining. The only blemishes on the Pac-10 champ's blotter are a November loss to No. 1-ranked and defending NCAA champ Auburn; plus a defeat by Arizona last weekend in Tucson.

No. 6 Arizona concludes its season in two weeks against intra-state foe Arizona State and its superstar breaststroker, Olympic 200 champ Agnes Kovacs.

Caverly picked up an NCAA "A" cut with her 4:11.24 in the 400 IM, winning the event by 5.26 seconds over her closest competitor. The time would rank her fourth nationally were it not for the fact that she's already been a career-best 4:10.37 to rank third. That swim was done against Auburn, where she finished runner-up to the Tigers' defending NCAA champ Maggie Bowen's list-leading 4:09.90.

If Caverly swims this race at NCAAs, along with USC soph Kaitlin Sandeno (No. 2 nationally at 4:10.04) and perennial Atlantic Coast Conference champ Mirjana Bosevska of Virginia, then A) Bowen will have her work cut out for her and B) former Stanford star Summer Sanders' American/NCAA record (4:02.28 from NCAAs at Austin 11 years ago) may finally fall beneath the waves.

Bowen's pr is 4:04.69 from last year's NCAAs, also at Texas, and she ranks third all-time on both the performers and perforrmances' lists. Only Sanders and Tracy Caulkins' 4:04.63 from the U.,S. Nationals at Harvard 22 years ago are faster — and can you say sub 4:00.0?

(Especially — ESPECIALLY — with NCAAs at Auburn, a "rabid" crowd packing the rafters of the James E. Martin Natatorium and Bowen swimming in her final collegiate competition before the home folks. Trying to beat her at home is akin to Pieter van den Hoogenband trying to beat Ian Thorpe in the Olynpic 200 free at Sydney. Can't be done!)

Caverly's winning times in the backstrokes (56.37, 1:59.75) are both NCAA "B" standards. To make sure she didn't feel underutilized, Cardinal coach Richard Quick had her lead off on Stanford's winning 400 medley relay team, which recorded an NCAA "B" and season-best time of 3:42.39 — eighth nationally. Caverly was joined by Kirk her sister (rookie Dana) and sophomore Tami Ransom.

Ransom is national girls' independent school record-holder in the 200 IM (1:58.76 while at Cincinnati's St. Ursuline Academy a couple of years ago). Caverly's record — set at CIF two years ago for San Clemente High — is a tick slower at 1:58.86.

TK remained unbeaten in the breaststrokes this season with a sweep of the races. She won the 100 in 1:01.10 to extend her collegiate unbeaten streak here to 23 before coming back to win the 200 in 2:11.60. Both marks were NCAA "A" times.

Her list-leading times are 59.74 against Auburn (history's second best dual meet mark); and 2:09.66 against Kovacs last weekend at Tempe — fastest-ever in a dual-meet.

Boutwell swept the 50 (23.42) and 100 (50.95) frees with NCAA "B" times in both.

USC picked up wins in seven of the meet's 16 events. Distance specialist (a term of endearment to Trojan coach Mark Schubert) Asa Sundlund swept the 500 (4:53.52) and 1650 (16:38.49). Troy's Margie Pedder, starting to "get the hang" of this yards business (she's a British Olympian who joined SC last month), won the 200 free (1:50.05) and 200 fly (1:59.10). All four winning times meet the NCAA "B" standard.

Defending NCAA champ Blythe Hartley dominated the diving competitions, rolling to victories by large margins in both the one-meter (317.77 points) and three-meter (324.00) competitions. Jana Krohn was a winner in the 100 fly with an NCAA "B" performance of 54.69.

— Bill Bell

Stanford Women's Swimming And Diving Results
USC
