POWERED by 23 season best times and four career best clockings, the 11th-ranked North Carolina women&#39;s and 23rd-ranked men&#39;s swimming and diving teams swam to wins over Georgia Tech and Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>Using a double dual meet format with 13 events the Tar Heel women held back a strong challenge from 15th-ranked Maryland to win 147-96 while UNC also topped Georgia Tech 186-57. Maryland went 1-1 on the day by downing Georgia Tech 168-75 in the women&#39;s meet.<\/p>\n<p>On the men&#39;s side the Tar Heel men defeated Maryland 192-59 and Georgia Tech 170-82. The Tech men won their head-to-head battle with the Terrapins by a 155-82 score. <\/p>\n<p>With the two wins Carolina assured itself of its 64th successive season without a losing record. The only time in history UNC had a losing mark was 1939, the first year of swimming at Carolina. <\/p>\n<p>The UNC women long ago clinched a winning season. UNC has had a winning record every year since the program started in 1975. Carolina&#39;s men also clinched a winning season in ACC dual meets. They have had a winning mark in the ACC every year since the league started in 1954. <\/p>\n<p>Carolina&#39;s women ended their dual meet season 12-1 overall and 7-0 in the ACC. UNC won its final 12 meets of the season, losing only to #3 Georgia in the season opener. Maryland&#39;s women lost their first meet of the season and are now 10-1 overall and 4-1 in the ACC. The Tech women are 4-7, 1-5 in the conference. <\/p>\n<p>The UNC men improved to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the ACC. The Tar Heels conclude their dual meet season at NC State Friday night. Tech is now 4-7 overall, 2-4 in the ACC and Maryland is 4-6 overall and 1-4 in the ACC. <\/p>\n<p>On the men&#39;s side UNC dominated the meet with nine wins while Georgia Tech had two and Maryland two. On the women&#39;s side, Carolina won eight events, Maryland three and Georgia Tech two. <\/p>\n<p>For the UNC men, seven different individuals won events and UNC won both relays. Sean Quinn, Jon Albrecht, Michael Chenier, Casey Coble, Eric Poitas, Josh Glasco and Stephen Krebs had individual triumphs. Eddy Matkovich and Justin Donato each swam on two winning relays and Quinn, Albrecht, Chad Ames and Michael Pigassou were each on a winning relay. Tech&#39;s two wins both came in distance freestyle by Shilo Ayalon and Maryland had victories by Mark Hill in the 100 free and Erik Weinberg in the 200 back. <\/p>\n<p>For the women, Whitney Smith led Carolina with two individual wins. Other winners were Christy Watkins, Kelly Weeks, Jessi Perruquet, Kathleen Quinn and Becky Acker. UNC&#39;s 400-yard freestyle relay of Leila Martin, Virginia Hanson, Jessie Brosch and Watkins also scored a victory. Maryland won three events with its 400-yard medley relay winning also with victories by Inbal Levavi and Shandra Johnson. Georgia Tech&#39;s Laurissa Prystaj won both women&#39;s diving events. <\/p>\n<p>Four Tar Heels posted career bests on the day with Elizabeth Bruce clocking a 2:16.98 200-yard breastsroke and Patrick Woodruff a 2:07.56 200-yard breaststroke. Whitney Smith also went her career best in winning in the 1000-yard freestyle at 9:52.47. Chad Ames swam his career best in the 200-yard individual medley at 1:53.60. Altogether, the UNC men posted 15 season bests in the meet while the Tar Heel women had eight season bests. <\/p>\n<p>Season bests for the women other than the two career bests were Virginia Hanson in the 100-yard freestyle (52.31) and 200-yard freestyle (1:51.13), Jessie Brosch (2:01.05) and Emily Carroll (2:07.90) in the 200-yard butterfly, Meghan Nystrand in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.87) and Amanda Smith in the 500-yard freestyle (4:59.77). <\/p>\n<p>Men&#39;s top season performances came from Stephen Mohr in the 1000 free (9:20.40), Jon Albrecht in the 200 free (1:39.70), Hal Wansley in the 100 back (53.95) and the 200 IM (2:00.53), Eddy Matkovich in the 50 free (21.03), Jon Van Assen in the 200 free (1:43.23), Casey Coble in the 200 IM (1:52.47), John Hartmann in the 200 IM (1:54.63) and the 200 back (1:50.25), Jimmy Owens in the 200 back (1:54.49), Eric Poitras in one-meter diving (318.20 points), Erich Gloege in three-meter diving (230.20 points) and Sinisa Haberle in the 200 breast (2:08.90). <\/p>\n<p>Georgia Tech&#39;s outing was highlighted by an NCAA &quot;B&quot; cut performance in the 500-yard freestyle from senior All-American Shilo Ayalon.  <\/p>\n<p>Both the Tech men&#39;s and women&#39;s squads complete the dual meet season with identical 4-7 (1-4 ACC) marks.<\/p>\n<p>Ayalon picked up a pair of wins in the 500 and 1000 free. His season-best time of 4:26.83 in the 500 provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Championships. Ayalon took first in the 1000 free with a mark of 9:12.87. Freshman Sam Morgan was not far behind Ayalon, as he placed second in the 1000 and third in the 500 free, recording lifetime-best marks of 9:15.52 and 4:32.55, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman diver Laurissa Prystaj, who took first on both boards, led Tech&#39;s women. She tallied 248.35 points on the one-meter board and 277.35 in the three-meter event.<\/p>\n<p>The Yellow Jacket men also enjoyed several season-best swims. Leading things off was the 400 medley relay team of Jeremy Raines, Robbie Foster, Teemu Kettunen and Marc Maier, who finished second in 3:23.24. Sophomore Matt Figh had a solid meet, posting a pair of season-bests. He took third in both the 200 free (1:40.97) and the 200 fly (1:52.17). <\/p>\n<p>The Jackets also got season-bests in the 50 free from Kettunen (21.16) and freshman Ryan Riebesell (21.18), who also went a season-best 46.85 in the 100 free. <\/p>\n<p>The men&#39;s 200 back was also a strong event for Tech, as senior James Salazar took second in 1:49.69, a season-best. Jorge Oliver and Raines, took fourth and fifth, with Raines setting a lifetime best with a swim of 1:53.35. Tech also took second and third in the 200 breast, as Tomonori Tsuji went 2:02.53, followed by Foster in 2:07.30.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman Meghan DeVinney led the women&#39;s swimmers with a third-place finish in the 200 fly. She posted a time of 2:06.77, while teammate Lisa Hancock was fourth in 2:07.01. Hancock was also sixth in the 1000 free.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, sophomore Anna Saum clocked a season-best time of 24.53 in the 50 free.<\/p>\n<p>The ACC Championships are slated for February 20-22
