Additionally, Energy Standard and Aqua Centurions won the final two ISL regular season matches, and only the play-in match remains before a month break and then the playoffs in November.<\/p>\n<p>Read the five biggest stories of the week in The Week That Was sponsored by Suitmate.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Week That Was #1: Katie Ledecky Joins University of Florida as Volunteer Assistant Coach; Will Train for 2024 in Gainesville<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/katie-ledecky-florida-1024x910.jpg\" alt=\"katie-ledecky-florida\" width=\"700\" height=\"622\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Courtesy: Katie Ledecky (via Twitter)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-joins-university-of-florida-as-volunteer-assistant-coach-will-train-for-2024-in-gainesville\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>By Dan D&#8217;Addona<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Seven-time Olympic gold medalist\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong>\u00a0announced she has joined the Florida swimming and diving program as a volunteer swimming coach and will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-embraces-challenges-to-come-in-her-new-gator-chapter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">train for the 2024 Olympics<\/a> in Gainesville with Florida head coach <strong>Anthony<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Nesty<\/strong>, who was an assistant coach for Team USA at the Tokyo Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Florida confirmed the move.<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky, who won two gold and two silver in Tokyo earlier this year, completed her degree at Stanford, where she trained under\u00a0<strong>Greg Meehan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited to be a part of the University of Florida\u2019s world-class swimming and diving program and train for the 2024 Olympics with Coach Anthony Nesty, and the top-tier mid-distance and distance training group,\u201d Katie Ledecky said. \u201cMy years at Stanford, both academically and athletically, were nothing short of incredible and I\u2019m looking forward to the opportunity and challenges that lie ahead in Gainesville.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was a tough move to leave Stanford and Meehan, Ledecky wrote: \u201cStanford has been my second home for the last five years. It will always have a special place in my heart. Having completed my college degree this year, I am moving east to be closer to home and family. My years at Stanford have been nothing short of incredible. I\u2019m so grateful for my coach Greg Meehan, as well as my teammates, professors, friends and everyone in the larger Palo Alto\/Menlo Park area who have supported me through these years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nesty was thrilled with Ledecky\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe knowledge and experience that Katie brings to the pool are unparalleled,\u201d Nesty said. \u201cIn addition to her obvious excellence as a swimmer, Katie is an exceptional person who will make a great impact on the student-athletes here. At the touch, it was Tang who secured victory, her mark of 1:54.26 establishing a national record.<\/p>\n<p>Tang needed that sterling performance to hold off Yang, who came through with a mark of 1:54.48. At the Tokyo Games, Yang and Tang handled the opening legs of China\u2019s triumphant 800 free relay, teaming with\u00a0<strong>Zhang Yufei<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Li Bingjie<\/strong>\u00a0for a world record of 7:40.33. At the Chinese National Games, they were not far off the Asian record of 1:53.92, held by Hong Kong\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The next few days produced quick performances, headlined by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-wang-shun-storms-to-gold-in-200-im-michael-andrew-fades-to-fifth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olympic champion<\/a>\u00a0<strong>Wang Shun<\/strong>\u00a0in his primary event. The third-fastest performer in the history of the event, Wang hit the wall in 1:56.33 to finish more than two seconds ahead of his closest pursuer,\u00a0<strong>Qin Haiyang<\/strong>\u00a0(1:58.63).<\/p>\n<p>Wang is coming off a career-defining showing at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, where he went 1:55.00 in the 200 medley to fend off Great Britain\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Duncan Scott<\/strong>. That effort moved the Chinese star to No. 3 all-time, trailing only Americans\u00a0<strong>Ryan Lochte<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s 800 freestyle went to\u00a0<strong>Li Bingjie<\/strong>, who checked in with a performance of 8:17.39. Tenth and out of the final at the Olympics, Li posted a time on home soil that would have earned the bronze medal during the summer. In the 100 freestyle,\u00a0<strong>Yang<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Junxuan<\/strong>\u00a0went 53.42 for the title. Meanwhile,\u00a0<strong>Xu Jiayu<\/strong>\u00a0(1:56.89) and\u00a0<strong>Yu Jingyao<\/strong>\u00a0(2:22.61) earned respective wins in the men\u2019s 200 backstroke and women\u2019s 200 breaststroke.<\/p>\n<p>In the women\u2019s 200 butterfly, Olympic champion\u00a0<strong>Zhang Yufei<\/strong>\u00a0had no trouble prevailing in her prime event. Zhang checked in with a swim of 2:05.84, which supplied a comfortable margin over runnerup\u00a0<strong>Zhu Jiaming<\/strong>\u00a0(2:07.24). A down-to-the-wire duel emerged in the men\u2019s 100 freestyle, where\u00a0<strong>He Junyi<\/strong>\u00a0narrowly claimed victory in a time of 48.51. He was followed to the wall by\u00a0<strong>Yang Jintong<\/strong>\u00a0(48.55) and\u00a0<strong>Pan Zhanle<\/strong>\u00a0(48.59).<\/p>\n<p>On the final day, <strong>Liu Xiang<\/strong>\u00a0ventured into exclusive territory in the 50-meter freestyle. En route to the gold medal, Liu clocked a time of 23.97 to establish an Asian record in the one-lap sprint. She bettered her own record, which was 24.03. She was followed to the wall by\u00a0<strong>Zhang Yufei<\/strong>\u00a0in 24.29.<\/p>\n<p>While Liu has produced quick performances in the past, she was not part of the sprint event at the recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tokyo2020.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olympic Games in Tokyo<\/a>. Yet, she clearly took advantage of her opportunity on home soil, where\u00a0<strong>Cheng Yujie<\/strong>\u00a0was also strong with an effort of 24.41.<\/p>\n<p>Speed was also on display in the men\u2019s 50 freestyle, which was won by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/yu-hexin-zhang-yufei-take-50-free-titles-on-final-night-of-chinese-nationals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Yu Hexin<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in a Chinese record of 21.68. Yu was the only swimmer to crack the 22-second barrier, as\u00a0<strong>Wang Changhao<\/strong>\u00a0was the runnerup in 22.06. Yu was considerably faster than the 22.14 mark he produced at the Olympics, which was good for a tie for 19th place.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>#4: Shaine Casas to Turn Pro and Train at Texas with Eddie Reese<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-post-image-container\">\n<div style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/shaine-casas-o-trials-2021-6501.jpg\" alt=\"shaine-casas-\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shaine Casas &#8212; Photo Courtesy: NCAA Media<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><em>By David Rieder<\/em><\/div>\n<p>Weeks after we learned that<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/shaine-casas-to-leave-texas-a-will-stay-in-state-with-transfer-to-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Shaine Casas<\/strong>\u00a0will be leaving his training base at Texas A&amp;M and relocating to the University of Texas<\/a>,\u00a0<em>Swimming World<\/em>\u00a0has learned more information on Casas\u2019 future plans. The 21-year-old from McAllen, Texas, will not be using any of his remaining college eligibility with the Longhorns, and instead, he will be turning professional while training with Texas men\u2019s coach\u00a0<strong>Eddie Reese<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Sources told\u00a0<em>Swimming World<\/em>\u00a0that the move has been in development for several weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Reese spoke highly of Casas and his potential. He told\u00a0<em>Swimming World<\/em>, \u201cI really believe he\u2019s one of the best swimmers in the world in a couple things, and I\u2019m looking forward to the time when he shows it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At last season\u2019s NCAAs,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/shaine-casas-fights-off-push-from-lasco-to-rattle-murphys-american-record-in-200-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Casas missed\u00a0<strong>Ryan Murphy\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0American record in the 200 back by just two hundredths with his 1:35.75<\/a>, and he ranks second all-time in that event. In short course yards, Casas also ranks third all-time in the 200 IM (1:38.95), fourth in the 100 back (43.87) and sixth in the 200 fly (1:38.69). In long course, Casas won U.S. National titles in the 100 and 200 back in 2019, and he was expected to contend for spots on the Olympic team this year.<\/p>\n<p>At the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2021\/us-olympic-team-trials-wave-ii-live-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olympic Trials<\/a>, Casas ended up finishing third in the 100 back, 0.28 behind runner-up\u00a0<strong>Hunter Armstrong<\/strong> and sixth in the 200 back. He was just off his lifetime best in the 100 back but almost two seconds off in the 200 back. When an Olympic cycle culminates, there\u2019s a rest and a re-evaluation before committing to the next four years. There\u2019s a regrouping to assess what the priorities are and where a coach of Schubert\u2019s pedigree wants to be when the next Olympics convene.<\/p>\n<p>At 72, Schubert felt that after this most recent and most unique Olympic cycle, the time was right to take a step back.<\/p>\n<p>Schubert resigned on Thursday\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamunify.com\/team\/scmvn\/page\/system\/coaches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as the head coach<\/a>\u00a0of Mission Viejo Nadadores, the club at which he made his name in the 1970s as one of the world\u2019s premier swim coaches and where he returned in 2016 to keep Mission Viejo atop the American swimming world.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAfter the Olympics and with COVID and everything, it was a pretty hard couple of years,\u201d Schubert told\u00a0<em>Swimming World.\u00a0<\/em>\u201cWe had a successful Trials, and I was proud of how the athletes did in the Olympics. And it just seemed like the right time to me.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Schubert is looking to spend more time with his wife, Joke, and his grandchildren. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimacrossamerica.org\/site\/TR\/PoolSwim\/National?pg=entry&amp;fr_id=5811\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Block Cancer swim<\/a>, done in memory of her late father, has raised more than $130,000 for cancer research and awareness via a partnership with Swim Across America.<\/p>\n<p>Beisel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moultonadvertiser.com\/sports\/national_sports\/article_2afbd47b-05eb-52c0-a559-3b84c3144677.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">covered the distance<\/a>\u00a0in five hours and 19 minutes, departing from Matunuck beach just after 6 a.m. on Saturday. She was greeted on the island by her mother, Joannie, and brother Danny.
