The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimacrossamerica.org\/site\/TR\/PoolSwim\/National?pg=entry&amp;fr_id=5811\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Block Cancer swim<\/a>, done in memory of her late father, has raised more than $130,000 for cancer research and awareness via a partnership with Swim Across America.<\/p>\n<p>Beisel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moultonadvertiser.com\/sports\/national_sports\/article_2afbd47b-05eb-52c0-a559-3b84c3144677.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">covered the distance<\/a> in five hours and 19 minutes, departing from Matunuck beach just after 6 a.m. on Saturday. She was greeted on the island by her mother, Joannie, and brother Danny. A group of supporters awaited her at Ballad\u2019s Beach Resort <a href=\"https:\/\/turnto10.com\/news\/local\/olympic-medalist-elizabeth-beisel-embarks-on-ocean-swim-to-raise-money-for-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">later in the day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt amazing the first three hours,\u201d Beisel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.providencejournal.com\/story\/sports\/high-school\/2021\/09\/25\/watch-elizabeth-beisel-leave-matunuck-swim-block-island\/5790010001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the <\/a><em>Providence Journal.<\/em> \u201cI was like, \u2018Ah, this is cake.\u2019 Then the current started to pick up. The swell started to pick up. Conditions finally relented on the weekend for the attempt.<\/p>\n<p>The 29-year-old Beisel is a native of Rhode Island. She won a silver medal in the women\u2019s 400 individual medley and a bronze in the 200 backstroke at the 2012 London Olympics. Her on-water support crew included two kayakers and two support boats. <span id=\"m_5044119685551632645m_-2204522099332692700docs-internal-guid-222e20e2-7fff-6ae3-acd3-331abfdded39\">Atlantic Shark Institute executive director <strong>Jon Dodd,<\/strong> Marathon Swimmers Federation observer and marathon swimmer <strong>Elaine Howley,<\/strong> Swim Across America CEO <strong>Rob Butcher,<\/strong> Olympian <strong>Craig Beardsley<\/strong> and family friends <strong>Jack Nichting<\/strong> and <strong>Stephanie Cotsonas<\/strong> were among those supporting her during the swim. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Beisel\u2019s father, <strong>Ted<\/strong> <strong>Beisel<\/strong>, died in July after a battle with pancreatic cancer. After her work commentating on the Tokyo Olympics for NBC, Elizabeth Beisel turned her attention to the Block Island swim, helping to raise six figures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just wish my dad was here, honestly,\u201d Beisel said. \u201cI know that he\u2019s here in spirit. Everybody who has fought cancer and who\u2019s beat cancer, this is for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\u201cElizabeth has been supporting Swim Across America for many years, even before her father\u2019s diagnosis, so this was our opportunity to support her,\u201d Butcher said. \u201cOur cancer researchers will use the Block Cancer funds for science and patient care that will hopefully save
