{"id":487952,"date":"2021-09-26T09:08:56","date_gmt":"2021-09-26T16:08:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=487952"},"modified":"2021-09-26T09:08:56","modified_gmt":"2021-09-26T16:08:56","slug":"kenya-swimming-federation-election-delays-could-lead-to-fina-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kenya-swimming-federation-election-delays-could-lead-to-fina-ban\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya Swimming Federation Election Delays Could Lead to FINA Ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Kenya Swimming Federation Election Delays Could Lead to FINA Ban<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Kenya Swimming Federation faces a ban from FINA if it cannot conduct elections to fill its board, according to reports from the country.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Star<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-star.co.ke\/sports\/2021-09-13-four-year-ban-looms-over-ksf-for-failure-to-conduct-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported this week<\/a> that FINA has been monitoring the situation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidethegames.biz\/articles\/1113309\/kenya-facing-possible-fina-ban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in Kenya for several years<\/a>, including a temporary suspension in Dec. 2019 for the same lack of elections. The former KSF head and FINA Bureau member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-to-devote-millions-in-investment-to-african-swimming-after-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was arrested in 2017<\/a>, triggering changes in the organization. The KSF adopted a new constitution in January, but the elections that that document called for have not yet occurred.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, an Interim Management Committee (IMC) has been in charge and delaying the elections with court actions. The KSF contented in a statement that the IMC\u2019s delay of election was \u201cdeliberately due to personal interests,\u201d per The Star. A deadline of Oct. 30 has been set to end the election blockade.<\/p>\n<p>Without elections, KSF\u2019s power and standing is diminished globally. KSF officials have been suspended by FINA. Should the standoff continue, Kenya swimmers could be barred from competing in FINA and African Swimming Federation (CANA) meets. FINA holds the leverage of a four-year ban on the KSF if the issues aren\u2019t rectified.<\/p>\n<p>The Kenya Swimming Federation has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbc.co.ke\/sports-disputes-tribunal-urged-to-allow-kenya-swimming-federation-hold-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appealed to the nation\u2019s<\/a> Sports Dispute Tribunal to intervene and speed the way for elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been given too many chances by FINA to get our house in order,\u201d Nairobi swimming official <strong>Teddy Wamuyu <\/strong>said. \u201cIf we don&#8217;t, we will get banned for four years and our swimmers will suffer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenya sent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/danilo-rosafio-emily-muteti-selected-to-represent-kenya-at-tokyo-olympics\/\">two swimmers to the Tokyo Olympics<\/a>, both in Universality spots. Neither is based in the country, with <strong>Emily Muteti<\/strong> training at Grand Canyon University in the United States and <strong>Danilo Rosafio<\/strong> based out of Loughborough University in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Under new president <strong>Husain Al-Musallam<\/strong>, FINA has signaled a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-to-devote-millions-in-investment-to-african-swimming-after-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">greater emphasis on and investment in African swimming<\/a>. Ensuring that federations adhere to agreed-upon norms would seem to be of a piece with that strategy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kenya Swimming Federation Election Delays
