Ghana\u2019s Farida Iddriss Appointed to FINA Reform Committee<\/strong><\/p>\n

Farida Iddriss<\/strong>, the treasurer of the Ghana Swimming Association, has been appointed to FINA\u2019s Reform Committee, per reports out of Africa<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Idriss has worked as the treasurer of the Ghana Swimming Association for the last six years. She was named the administrative manager of the Ghana Olympic Committee in the spring<\/a>, bringing an emphasis on women\u2019s sports to one of the most populous West African countries. She is also a member of the Zone 2 executive board of the African Swimming Confederation (CANA), helping Ghana host the CANA Zone 2 Championships in 2020.<\/p>\n

Idriss holds a master\u2019s degree in sports ethics and integrity. She is a registered swimming referee, having passed FINA\u2019s licensing exam in 2015.<\/p>\n

From a letter that Idriss wrote upon accepting the position:<\/p>\n

\u201cNearly one week ago, on the trust of the Aquatics world, I accepted to serve our community as the President of FINA. In doing so, I made a commitment that I would drive change through a series of reforms, emphasizing the need for greater transparency, inclusion and innovation in the management and development of our sport.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThis was highlighted in my campaign as a priority and on my recommendation, the FINA Bureau agreed to the formation of the FINA Reform Committee. It is now my distinct pleasure to invite you to serve the Aquatics world as a member of this Committee.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The appointment fits with two themes of the reign of new FINA president Husain Al-Musallam.<\/strong> When he was elected in June, he immediately called for a reform committee<\/a> to look into matters of \u201ccommunication, marketing, governance, anti-doping, gender equity, safeguarding, major events and sport development.\u201d<\/p>\n

He has also signaled an effort to expand FINA\u2019s reach beyond traditional power centers. The untapped potential of Africa is the most obvious frontier, as are the Middle East countries that the Kuwaiti knows so well. Already, FINA has put money behind that plan, increasing scholarships<\/a> and funding for facilities and swimmers in Africa<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
