Alabama didn't have a chance.

Auburn's top-ranked men’s swimming and diving team (tied with Stanford) extended its winning streak to 10-straight in a 175-114 win over 14th-ranked Alabama here this evening.

The top-ranked Auburn women followed suit by winning their seventh-consecutive dual meet, a 163-127 victory over 20th-ranked Alabama at the Don Gambril Olympic Pool.

Auburn's 10 straight men's wins ranks them second behind co-leader Stanford's 14 consecutive victories over the last two years. The Cardinal has two meets remaining: USC next weekend at home, then Cal in three weeks at Berkeley.

“We’re pleased with the wins over our in-state rival,” said Tiger coach David Marsh. “This is always a special meet. Alabama has a proud tradition in swimming. It was made clear to me when I was hired how important this event is and that has been good counsel.”

With the women’s win, two seniors, Maggie Bowen and Cassidy Maxwell, concluded their careers without ever losing a dual meet, helping Auburn finish 26-0 in the last four seasons. They became the first Auburn swimmers to ever finish their careers undefeated in dual meet action.

“It was awesome to get a win over Auburn’s number-one rival,” said Bowen, double-defending NCAA champ in the 200-400 individual medleys and defending World 200 IM champ. “The dual-meet is what collegiate swimming is all about. I’m sad that tonight was my last dual-meet, but I have no regrets.”

Both Bowen and Maxwell aided in the team’s cause by winning a pair of events each. Bowen took the 1000 yard freestyle in 9:56.74 and the 200 butterfly in an NCAA B-qualifying time of 1:59.68. Maxwell captured the 50 free in 23.95 and the 100 free in 51.28.

“Cassidy had her best meet of the season,” said Marsh.
“I couldn’t ask anymore from one of our senior leaders. She has a long connection to the Auburn-Alabama rivalry since both of her parents attended the University of Alabama. I’m proud of the way she finished in her last dual meet. We’re proud of both Cassidy and Maggie and tonight was an appropriate way for them to go out.”

Auburn diver Caesar Garcia broke a 16-year old school record, winning the three-meter event with a score of 382.58. The previous record was held by Jose Rocha with a 382.28 score in 1987. Garcia also won the one-meter board with a score of 323.18.

“Caesar continues to show great leadership and maturity,” said diving coach Jeff Shaffer. “He continues to make strides including increasing the difficulty of his dives. This will be a big confidence builder for him heading into SECs and NCAAs.”

Auburn’s Margaret Hoelzer picked up an A-qualifying standard, winning the 100-yard backstroke in 55.05, which matched her career-best from last year's SECs. Jeri Moss, a Southern California native of Riverside who was a CIF champ last season. was second with a B-standard time of 56.32.

Hoelzer also won the 500 free, swimming a B-cut 4:52.02. She was followed by sophomore Kirsty Coventry in 4:55.08. Coventry, a native of Zimbabwe, was Commonwealth Games 200 IM gold medalist last sumer in Manchester and has designs of her own on Bowen's NCAA IM titles.

The Auburn women also won the 400 freestyle relay as the team of Maxwell, Hoelzer, Heather Kemp and Kirsty Coventry swam a B-standard time of 3:25.01.

The Auburn men started off the night by winning the 200 medley relay with the team of Derek Gibb, Pat Calhoun, Fred Bousquet and Matt Kidd clocking an NCAA B-cut 1:29.33. B.J. Jones followed with a 1000 freestyle win in 9:12.66.

Rookie George Bousquet, a Frenchman who joined the team early last month, posted Auburn’s fastest seasonal time in the 100 fly with his B standard and pr 48.25.

The Tigers took the top three finishes in the 100 back with George Bovell placing first in 49.80, followed by Doug Van Wie (50.49) and Chad Barlow (50.72). Van Wie then won the 200 back (1:49.28).

In the 100 breaststroke, Auburn’s Pat Calhoun and Will Brandt finished first and third in B-qualifying times of 54.47 and 55.28 respectively. A senior, Calhoun is the Tigers' and SEC record-holder in this race with his 52.68 from the conference-meet here his freshman sesason (2000). He was runner-up at NCAAs last year (52.72 to Texas' Brendan Hansen's 52.47).

Bovell scored his second gold when and teammate and Derek Gibb were first and second in the 100 free, clocking 44.61 and 44.98. Auburn also had the top three finishes in the 500 free with James Galloway taking first (4:30.76).

In exhibition action, Brad Knueven swam an in-season best time of 1:50.78 in the 200 individual medley.

“Brad is a great example of our whole senior class,” Marsh said. “He has had his best year training. It was great to see him go out and swim his best season time in the 200 IM.”

Auburn’s 400 free relay team of Ryan Wochomurka, Derek Gibb, Bousquet and Bovell won with a B standard 2:58.42.

“Our men’s team has prepared well this year,” said Marsh. “Tonight, we had a solid performance, but we have to improve going into the SEC Championships and to contend for an NCAA title.”

Alabama gave a fine accounting for itself. "We raced really well today," Alabama head coach Don Wagner said. "They (Auburn) have incredible talent and they demonstrated it tonight. But there is no doubt that they were in a meet tonight. We are the best that we have been in a long time, and we are just going to improve."

The Alabama women's team started the meet strongly in the 200 yard medley relay, posting a time of 1:42.92.
