Former Ohio State swimming coach and American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) CEO Bill Wadley<\/strong> has died, multiple sources have confirmed.<\/p>\n

He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of pancreatic cancer earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Bill Wadley had retired as head coach at Ohio State<\/a> in March 2017 where he coached 16 Olympians, 30 Big Ten Champions, and was named 2010 Big Ten Coach of the Year.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur Ohio State swimming and diving family are grieving the loss of Coach Bill Wadley,\u201d Ohio State director of swimming and diving Bill Dorenkott<\/strong> said. \u201cOur thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Gail, and his two sons, Brian and Michael. Coach Wadley left an indelible mark on all those who were fortunate enough to spend time on a pool deck with him. He was a coach, friend, peer and mentor to countless individuals who he inspired in his over four decades in the sport. Bill was so proud of being a Buckeye. He loved the university and his greatest joy was the young men he coached and the amazing things they have done after graduating from Ohio State. Last week, we were able to spend some time together reminiscing. His smile was wide as he recalled cherished memories. There is no doubt in my mind that his heart was full.”<\/p>\n

Wadley previously served on the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Board of Directors and was the past president for ASCA.\u00a0 He was named executive director of ASCA in October 2020, taking over for\u00a0Steve Roush<\/strong>, who is now the project manager for the 65-year-old organization.\u00a0 Roush was hired at ASCA in July 2019, succeeding John Leonard<\/strong>\u00a0who had held the position for 35 years.<\/a><\/p>\n

In the pool, 19 of Bill Wadley\u2019s swimmers have been named All-Americans and 63 have earned honorable mention All-America status. In 2010, while hosting the Big Ten Championships, his team brought home the first conference title since 1956 and the 13th<\/sup> in program history. Under his tutelage, he had a swimmer compete at seven consecutive Summer Olympic Games.<\/p>\n

Former swimmers posted about Wadley’s death on social media.<\/p>\n

“Sad to see the passing of my<\/span> @OhioState<\/a><\/span> swim coach Bill Wadley this morning. He was a great coach, he cultivated an ecosystem where I met my brothers and lead the team to a Big Ten Championship in 2010. He will be missed. <\/span>#GoBucks<\/a>,” Quincy Lee wrote on Twitter. <\/span><\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In addition to his time at Ohio State, Wadley also had plenty of international coaching experience, being a member of the USA team staff at the 1991, 1993 and 2009 World University Games, the 1998 Goodwill Games and the 2011 Duel in the Pool.<\/p>\n

He resigned as<\/a> ASCA CEO earlier this year following a series of incidents outside of the pool.<\/p>\n

\u201cCoach Wadley spent close to 30 years serving the collegiate and international swimming community and he cared deeply about the sport of swimming and all that it provided student-athletes, as well as the benefits of higher education,\u201d Ohio State senior associate director of athletics for sport administration T.J. Shelton said in a remembrance on the Buckeyes’ site<\/a>. \u201cHe was even more passionate about teaching youth in the community to learn to swim through programs that he created. He poured his heart and soul into creating a championship culture within the program and cared deeply about the success of his athletes in the classroom even more than in the pool.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prior to OSU, Wadley spent two years as the men\u2019s swimming coach at Michigan State University, coaching the women\u2019s team in his final year with the Spartans as well.<\/p>\n

Wadley is a native of Rockford, Ill., and was a 1979 graduate of Austin Peay State University before heading to the Big Ten.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
