And his Wolfpack coach had a valid question: \u201cDude, what just happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Stewart didn\u2019t have an answer Saturday, the Cali Condor was even more at a loss for words Sunday when he blasted the world record in the event, going 48.33 seconds.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">WORLD RECORD!<\/p>\n<p>Coleman Stewart sets a new record in the 100m backstroke!! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iswimleague?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@iswimleague<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UKgvt7ilxF\">pic.twitter.com\/UKgvt7ilxF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CBS Sports (@CBSSports) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSSports\/status\/1432020906495389705?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 29, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Stewart was all-around sensational for the Condors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/isl-match-2-day-2-cali-condors-look-to-hold-on-to-lead\/\">who dominated ISL Match 2<\/a> with a league-record 707 points to get the victory over the LA Current, Tokyo Frog Kings and NY Breakers. Stewart helped the cause at every turn, including a 47-point output in the men\u2019s backstroke skins to clinch the win.<\/p>\n<p>Against the clock, though, Stewart was even more impressive. The debut season of ISL in 2019 yielded three world records. That was upped to nine individual world records (in six events) in 2020, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/six-world-records-that-could-fall-in-the-isl-semifinals\/\">all came in the semifinals and final<\/a>. A world record in the preliminary matches is stunning; to do it in the opening match of the season is utterly gob smacking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShort-course meters is kind of my bread-and-butter, just because I kick off the wall a lot,\u201d Stewart said in a virtual mixed zone. \u201cIt\u2019s a little different than short-course yards, but I\u2019m glad to be back my wheelhouse. It was pretty cool to get that record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No less an authority on setting world records than <strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> offered the context on just what his fellow Condor achieved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the fastest person in history for a moment of this sport,\u201d Dressel said. \u201cThis is a very big deal, and to do it in the first meet after coming off of Trials, where the goal of Olympic Trials is to make the team, there\u2019s probably a little bit of a downfall there. And to take a break and get back in your groove that quick, it just speaks volumes to this team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The swim downs the ISL and world record set last November by Energy Standard\u2019s <strong>Kliment Kolesnikov<\/strong> at 48.58. The splits:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Kliment Kolesnikov, Nov. 21, 2020: 23.80, 24.78 \u2013 48.58<\/li>\n<li>Coleman Stewart, Aug. 29, 2021: 23.45, 24.88 \u2013 48.33<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Stewart had gone 48.91 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/coleman-stewart-clips-grevers-american-record-in-100-back-scm-at-isl-also-excels-in-50-back\/\">on Saturday to clip<\/a> .01 off <strong>Matt Grevers\u2019<\/strong> American record from 2015. Sunday, the mustachioed Stewart trounced that, taking it out at a savage pace of 23.45 and holding on to make history and take a full jackpot over the field at 37 points.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-swimming-records-short-course-meters\/\">World Swimming Records: Short Course Meters<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Like most swimmers, Stewart wasn\u2019t sure what ISL would bring. His summer journey was quite different than most, missing out on the Olympics thanks to the depth of the American field. He was fourth in the 100 butterfly, eighth in the 100 freestyle and just 10th in the 100 back at Trials in Omaha.<\/p>\n<p>So to set a best time in the first go-round of the season \u2013 that wasn\u2019t on Stewart\u2019s radar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had absolutely no idea what to expect,\u201d he said. \u201cThis was a complete shock. I was not expecting to go best times, really.
