The Aussie men claimed three gold medals and two bronze medals to open the competition.<\/p>\n<p>It was a huge start for the Aussies, but several other countries claimed medals in a fast start to the meet, including an upset of the world record holder in the 100 butterfly and Russian Olympic Committee\u2019s <strong>Roman Zhdanov<\/strong> setting a world record.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/tokyo-2020\/paralympic-games\/en\/results\/swimming\/results-men-s-100m-freestyle-s8-fnl-000100-.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Results<\/a><br \/>\n\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2020-tokyo-paralympic-games\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Complete meet coverage<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s 50 free S10, Australia\u2019s <strong>Rowan Crothers<\/strong> earned the gold medal (23.21), while Ukraine\u2019s <strong>Maksym Krypak<\/strong> took the silver (23.33) and Brazil\u2019s <strong>Phelipe Rodrigues<\/strong> won the bronze (23.50).<\/p>\n<p>In the 100 freestyle, it was another Aussie victory as <strong>Ben Pophan<\/strong> claimed gold in the S8 event (57.37). He held off Russian Paralympic Committee\u2019s <strong>Andrey Nikolaev<\/strong>, who won the silver medal (57.69), and Greece\u2019s <strong>Dimosthenis Michalentzakis<\/strong>, who won the bronze (58.73).<\/p>\n<p>In the S9 400 free, Australia\u2019s <strong>William Martin<\/strong> continued the dominating opening-day performance by the Aussies. Martin won the gold medal in the S9 (4:10.25), followed by France\u2019s<strong> Ugo Didier<\/strong> (4:11.33) and Australian teammate <strong>Alexander Tuckfield <\/strong>(4:13.54)<strong>. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the 50 breast SB3, Russian Olympic Committee\u2019s <strong>Roman Zhdanov<\/strong> claimed gold in world-record fashion (46.49) ahead of Spain\u2019s <strong>Miguel Luque<\/strong> (49.08) and Japan\u2019s <strong>Takayuki Suzuki <\/strong>(49.32).<\/p>\n<p>In the S14 100 fly at the Paralympic Games, Brazil\u2019s <strong>Gabriel Bandeira<\/strong> won gold (54.76) ahead of Great Britain\u2019s world record holder <strong>Reece Dunn<\/strong> (55.12) and Australia\u2019s <strong>Benjamin<\/strong> <strong>Hance <\/strong>(56.90).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m quite happy with it, a little bit disappointed to be off my PB as if I\u2019d been nearer that I could of got gold, but for a first final on my debut Paralympics silver is not bad,&#8221; Dunn said.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m never satisfied, I could have the perfect race and I\u2019d find something &#8211; I\u2019m a little upset with my finish as I lost it there but I\u2019m still happy none the less as I knew it was going to be a tough race coming in and that it was going to go down to those last five meters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the S5 200 free, it was Italy\u2019s <strong>Francesco Bocciardo<\/strong> who claimed gold in the event (2:26.76). Spain\u2019s <strong>Antoni Ponce<\/strong> was the silver medalist (2:35.20), followed by Brazil\u2019s <strong>Daniel Dias,<\/strong> who won the bronze in the event (2:38.61).<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s <strong>Iyad Shalabi<\/strong> claimed gold in the S1 100 backstroke (2:28.04). Ukraine\u2019s <strong>Anton Kol<\/strong> won silver (2:28.29) and Italy\u2019s <strong>Francesco Bettella<\/strong> was the bronze medalist (2:32.08).<\/p>\n<p>In the S2 100 backstroke, Chile\u2019s<strong> Alberto Abarza<\/strong> won the gold medal (2:00.40) ahead of Brazil\u2019s <strong>Gabriel Araujo<\/strong> (2:02.47) and Russian Olympic Committee\u2019s <strong>Vladimir Danilenko<\/strong> (2:02.74).<\/p>\n<p>In the Paralympic 100 butterfly S13, Belarus\u2019 <strong>Ihar Boki<\/strong> won the gold medal (53.80), while Ukraine\u2019s <strong>Oleksii Virchenko<\/strong> earned silver (56.16) and Uzbekistan\u2019s <strong>Islam Aslanov<\/strong> won bronze (57.12).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was a gold rush for the Australian men during the first day of the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
