She\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-behind-outstanding-ashleigh-johnson-u-s-womens-water-polo-claim-third-straight-gold\/\">won two gold medals<\/a> as the goalie behind the U.S. women\u2019s powerhouse team. A native of Florida and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/bittersweet-senior-day-for-ashleigh-johnson-princeton-water-polo\/\">a graduate of Princeton<\/a>, she\u2019s a rare non-Californian in the upper echelon of American water polo, and she\u2019s one of the few Black players in an overwhelmingly white sport.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sports\/article\/Team-USA-s-Ashleigh-Johnson-an-eager-lonely-16340955.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">never run from that identity in her time<\/a> as an elite player. And with her second gold medal and her place in the sport\u2019s pantheon secure, she\u2019s doubling down on her commitments to inclusion in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realized it\u2019s a huge responsibility, but it\u2019s a responsibility that I have the opportunity to welcome and that I could welcome by literally just being here,\u201d Johnson said on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/two-time-gold-medalist-ashleigh-johnson-on-winning-water-polo-gold-in-tokyo\/#x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an appearance on CBS This Morning last week<\/a>. \u201cI could just a be a mirror that a young Black girl or young Black boy could look to to see themselves in and I realized how powerful that was and how powerful that could be for someone who is coming into our sport and maybe has heard the stereotype that Black people don\u2019t swim or looked and didn\u2019t see anyone who looked like them and got discouraged. It\u2019s part of my mission to change that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashleigh Johnson grew up not knowing about the history of exclusion of people of color from aquatic spaces. One of five children, she learned to swim in her family\u2019s backyard pool and grew up in a community that was supportive. It wasn\u2019t until she got to high school, college and levels beyond that she understood \u201cother people\u2019s perceptions\u201d about what a swimmer typically looks like.<\/p>\n<p>With those realizations came a conscious effort for Johnson to educate herself about the, \u201ccontext of exclusion and inclusion in aquatic spaces for people of color.\u201d A psychology and social psychology major, she has become an eloquent spokesperson for diversity and inclusion in sport. She\u2019s also founded the Johnson Sisters Swim Clinic in the Miami\/For Lauderdale area that puts the theory into practice.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to all that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimming-world-presents-ashleigh-johnson-the-reluctant-olympian\/\">she\u2019s accomplishing in the pool for the U.S.<\/a>, she\u2019s doing it with the weight of helping an entire historically excluded population try to break through. It\u2019s work that she knows is heavy, but something she doesn\u2019t shy away from.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I left in high school, going to the national team, going to college, I became more and more aware of other peoples\u2019 perception of me and whether or not I should be there,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I was already developing the protective mechanisms: The things that I told myself about myself, the stories that I had about myself that I knew didn\u2019t confirm those stories. \u2018You probably shouldn\u2019t be swimming. What about your hair? What about all of these things?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that me being here kind of breaks through those stories that other people tell young Black kids in aquatics about themselves so that they don\u2019t even have to doubt, they don\u2019t even question whether or not they belong here.
