McKeon raised her medal total to seven, four gold and three bronze, and equaled the record set at the 1952 Games in Helsinki by Soviet gymnast <strong>Maria Gorokhovskaya<\/strong>. McKeon&#8217;s final two medals were both gold, thanks to victories in the 50-meter freestyle and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-australia-puts-exclamation-point-on-superb-week-with-gold-in-womens-400-medley-relay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">400 medley relay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to tying the record of Gorokhovskaya, McKeon became only the fourth swimmer to win seven medals at a single Games. Previously, only men had achieved the feat. <strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong> won eight medals at the 2004 and 2008 Games while <strong>Mark Spitz<\/strong> (1972) and <strong>Matt Biondi<\/strong> (1988) won seven each in Munich and Seoul, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>McKeon now has 11 career Olympic medals. She won four at the Rio Games in 2016. Her overall breakdown is: Five gold; Two silver; Four bronze.\u00a0When the week started, McKeon was certainly positioned for a big-time performance, and she came through as Australia impressed throughout the meet.
