After all, at age 17, the New Zealand distance star has much more career in front of her than behind.<\/p>\n<p>She approached her swim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/new-zealands-16-year-old-erika-fairweather-qualifies-for-the-tokyo-olympics-in-the-400m-freestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the women\u2019s 400 freestyle<\/a> unfettered by pressure or expectation, occupying an outside lane with (on paper) little chance to make a final. She was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/sport\/tokyo-olympics-2020-17-year-old-erika-fairweather-smashes-new-zealand-record-to-make-400m-freestyle-final\/WCD5Q4OZ62J4EJ4JJ4XPMX4FAE\/\">elated to yield a time<\/a> that got her into a final Monday night and ultimately an eighth-place finish.<\/p>\n<p>With her eyes down the road in her career, the early marker is as special as it is unexpected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so amazing,\u201d Fairweather said Wednesday night. \u201cI didn\u2019t expect to make the final or semifinal, so getting that experience and being able to say that I made an Olympic final is just unreal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to lose the significance of what Fairweather is doing among the other buzzy names in the women\u2019s distance field. <strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> is solidifying her status as a bona fide, double-gold star at age 20. The established superstar she has taken aim at, <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong>, is A) anything but old at age 24 and in her third Olympics, and B) still a force to be reckoned with, as her gold in the 1,500 free shows.<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky was the elder stateswoman in the final of the women\u2019s 400 free. Six of the swimmers were under born after 2000, including two in 2002 and two in 2003. Fairweather is the second-youngest of the group, with her Dec. 31 birthday. And while attention rightly has gone to 14-year-old <strong>Summer McIntosh<\/strong> of Canada, 800 free swimmer <strong>Katie Grimes<\/strong> with her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/us\/athletics\/news\/katie-grimes-usa-swimming-future-katie-ledecky\/1557tra2xgnup12ox986u5dz9y\">\u201cfuture Ledecky\u201d label<\/a>, and the daunting program being undertaken by 19-year-old <strong>Li Bingjie<\/strong> of China, Fairweather is not a prospect to overlook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was such a young race compared to other ones,\u201d Fairweather said. \u201cThere\u2019s so much new blood coming through and that\u2019s so exciting. We kind of get to grow up together in this sport and continue racing each other for many years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fairweather managed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-katie-ledecky-ariarne-titmus-lined-up-for-400-free-duel\/\">stand out in prelims<\/a>, posting the fourth-fastest time at 4:02.28. That set the New Zealand record, taking down the mark set in 2012 Kiwi legend <strong>Lauren Boyle.<\/strong> Though Fairweather didn\u2019t follow it up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-in-epic-showdown-ariarne-titmus-dispatches-katie-ledecky-to-become-aussie-golden-girl-updated\/\">in the final<\/a> (she went 4:08.01 to finish eighth), that wasn\u2019t necessarily the goal. A final was a dream finish, much less a medal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt definitely helped me realize that I can step up onto the world stage like I have,\u201d Fairweather said. \u201cIt\u2019s a whole new kettle of fish. It definitely did help, but there\u2019s so much to learn from this one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The evidence is around her on the New Zealand team. <strong>Lewis Clareburt<\/strong> is having an outstanding meet on the men\u2019s side, finishing seventh in the men\u2019s 400 IM. He\u2019ll swim the final of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/sport\/olympics\/125907762\/tokyo-olympics-lewis-clareburt-books-spot-in-another-swimming-final-the-200m-medley\">men\u2019s 200 IM on Friday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Clareburt turned 22 this month. Erika Fairweather will be 20 when the Paris Olympics arrive in 2024, and the extra year to Tokyo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/covid-pandemic-has-opened-olympic-door-for-rapidly-developing-youngsters\/\">has proven valuable for her to emerge<\/a>. Her swimming future is bright, something that was obvious even before the Olympics.
