Beginning at 10:30 a.m. Tokyo time Tuesday morning (9:30 p.m. ET\/6:30 p.m. PT Monday in the USA), the two-hour session will include five gold-medal finals for the second straight day. It will begin with the first-ever Olympic final of the men&#8217;s 800 freestyle, followed by finals in the men&#8217;s 200 breaststroke , women&#8217;s 200 butterfly, men&#8217;s 100 freestyle and women&#8217;s 800 freestyle relay. Four semifinals, in the women&#8217;s 100 freestyle, men&#8217;s 200 backstroke, women&#8217;s 200 breaststroke and men&#8217;s 200 IM, will also be contested.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2020-tokyo-olympic-games\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Full Olympics coverage<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/tokyo-2020\/olympic-games\/en\/results\/swimming\/olympic-schedule-and-results.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Event schedule and results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2021-tokyo-olympics-day-five-finals-heat-sheets-international-elite-2021-07-24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day five finals heat sheets<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-mykahlio-romanchuk-top-seed-in-800-free-national-record-bonanza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mykhailo Romanchuk<\/strong> is the top seed in the 800 free<\/a>, just ahead of Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Florian Wellbrock<\/strong> and the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Bobby Finke<\/strong>, while 400 free silver medalist\u00a0<strong>Jack McLoughlin<\/strong> will swim in lane seven and world champion\u00a0<strong>Gregorio Paltrinieri<\/strong> barely got into the final as the eighth qualifier after battling mononucleosis last month.<\/p>\n<p>In the men&#8217;s 200 breaststroke, another favorite will be in the outside lane as world-record holder and two-time world champion\u00a0<strong>Anton Chupkov<\/strong> qualified only seventh for the final. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-zac-stubblety-cook-comfortably-posts-top-200-breast-time-wr-holder-anton-chupkov-seventh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zac Stubblety-Cook<\/strong> is the top seed<\/a>, with the chase pack consisting of Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>James Wilby<\/strong>, the Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Arno Kamminga<\/strong> and the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nic Fink<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zhang Yufei<\/strong> will look to do one better than her silver medal in the 100 butterfly as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympic-semifinals-zhang-yufei-tops-womens-200-butterfly-finalists-flickinger-2nd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she is the top seed in the women&#8217;s 200 fly<\/a>, with world champion\u00a0<strong>Boglarka Kapas<\/strong> of Hungary and the American duo of\u00a0<strong>Hali Flickinger<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Regan Smith<\/strong> close behind.<\/p>\n<p>And in the most anticipated event of the day, American\u00a0<strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> will aim to win his first individual Olympic gold medal &#8212; and his first individual Olympic medal of any color &#8212; in the 100 free. He swam a 47.23 in the semifinal, at the time the quickest in the world, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-kliment-kolesnikov-posts-47-11-in-100-free-semis-caeleb-dressel-wins-sf1-in-47-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kliment Kolesnikov<\/strong> swam faster with a 47.11<\/a>, and Australian defending champion\u00a0<strong>Kyle Chalmers<\/strong> will surely mount a push as well.<\/p>\n<p>To conclude the night, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-australia-cruises-to-top-seed-in-800-freestyle-relay-ready-to-take-down-world-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australia&#8217;s women are favored to earn a gold medal<\/a> (as they have every day of swimming so far) in the women&#8217;s 800 free relay. The Aussies may insert a completely new squad for the final, with 200 and 400 free gold medalist\u00a0<strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong>, versatile relay star <strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Madison Wilson<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Leah Neale\u00a0<\/strong>set to join the squad. The second-seeded Americans will bring in <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Allison Schmitt<\/strong>, while third seed Canada still has\u00a0<strong>Penny Oleksiak<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Summer McIntosh<\/strong> available.<\/p>\n<p>Top seeds for the semifinals include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-emma-mckeon-pops-olympic-record-in-prelims-of-100-freestyle-as-aussie-assault-continues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McKeon in the women&#8217;s 100 free<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-luke-greenbank-leads-top-names-all-make-200-back-semis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Great Britain&#8217;s <strong>Luke Greenbank<\/strong> in the men&#8217;s 200 back<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-south-african-tatjana-schoenmaker-just-misses-world-record-in-prelims-of-200-breaststroke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tatjana Schoenmaker<\/strong> in the women&#8217;s 200 breast (after setting an Olympic record in prelims)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-michael-andrew-first-mitch-larkin-ninth-in-200-im-prelims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Michael Andrew\u00a0<\/strong>in the men&#8217;s 200 IM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Of note, both Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kayla Sanchez<\/strong> and the Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong> scratched out of the 100 freestyle semifinals. Sanchez originally finished 10th and Kromowidjojo tied for 16th. So France&#8217;s <strong>Marie Wattel<\/strong>, who tied with Kromowidjojo for the last spot, got in without a swim-off, and then two swimmers who originally tied for 18th place, the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Erika Brown<\/strong> and China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Wu Qingfeng<\/strong>, swam off for the last spot.
