To celebrate what went down in the Japanese capital, Swimming World is revisiting the championship finals \u2013 each on their one-year anniversary \u2013 by once again running the stories that were posted after the medals were decided.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Five teams entered the 800 freestyle relay at the 1908 Olympics at London\u2019s White City Stadium. Four made the final (tough luck, Sweden). One wouldn\u2019t make the podium with a time \u2013 and a name, Australasia \u2013 lost to the annals of history. All of 23 nations participated in that Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain ascended the top step of an Olympic men\u2019s relay podium in those long-ago Games. The women would win gold four years later in Stockholm, in the first women\u2019s swimming competition at the Games.<\/p>\n<p>And since then, Great Britain has hardly sniffed an Olympic relay podium. Until Wednesday morning. And it came at the expense of another impressive streak.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain got the win in 6:58.58, <strong>Duncan Scott<\/strong> dropping the hammer off the end with a 1:43.45 to get the gold in emphatic fashion. With Russia second and Australian third, the Americans miss out on a medal for the first time in a non-boycotted Games.<\/p>\n<p>The golds go to <strong>Tom Dean,<\/strong> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-after-historic-start-in-tokyo-pool-great-britain-destined-for-800-free-relay-gold\/\">200 free individual winner<\/a>, <strong>James Guy, Matthew Richards<\/strong> and Scott. Dean was actually second to the first wall, beaten by <strong>Kieran Smith,<\/strong> but it merely delayed the inevitable. Guy was outstanding at 1:44.40, <strong>Matthew Richards<\/strong> turned in a solid 1:45.01 and then Scott brought it home. The time is .02 off the Olympic record set by the U.S. in Beijing and .03 of the American world record from 2009.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Stunning, stunning swim. ?<\/p>\n<p>Brilliant gold from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomdean00?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@tomdean00<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jimbob95goon?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Jimbob95goon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/M4ttRichards?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@M4ttRichards<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Dunks_Scott?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Dunks_Scott<\/a> in the 4x200m freestyle relay.<\/p>\n<p>And only 0.03s off the World Record!<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TeamGB?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TeamGB<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4nX2A8g4qL\">pic.twitter.com\/4nX2A8g4qL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Team GB (@TeamGB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TeamGB\/status\/1420228856632381443?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 28, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Russia surged from sixth to second on the back of <strong>Mikhail Dovgalyuk\u2019s<\/strong> split of 1:45.23 off the end in a generally front-loaded relay. Australia\u2019s <strong>Thomas Neill<\/strong> (1:44.74) held off <strong>Townley Haas<\/strong> of the U.S. (1:44.87) on the anchor to get the bronze for the Aussies.<\/p>\n<p>Just as historic as Great Britain\u2019s win is the absence of the Americans. For the first time in 51 Olympic men\u2019s relays (in non-boycotted Games), the U.S. men are off the podium. They have won 10 of 13 400 freestyle relays, including in Tokyo. They have gone 14-for-14 in the medley relay. And in the old standby of the Games, the 800 free relay that dates back more than a century, the United States has 17 golds, five silvers and two bronze (1908, 1992). And now, this.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s even more perplexing given <strong>Caeleb Dressel\u2019s <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-mens-800-free-relay-finals-lineups-released-americans-go-with-smith-kibler-apple-haas\/\">absence on the relay<\/a>. He was not selected, despite a 1:46.63 from Olympic Trials. Merely substituting that flat-start time with no improvement from a tapered Dressel instead of <strong>Zach Apple,<\/strong> who died in the final 50 on the way to a 1:47.31 split, would\u2019ve vaulted the U.S. from the 7:02.43 to silver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s shocking,\u201d <strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong> said on the NBC broadcast about the Dressel absence. \u201cIn my opinion, he\u2019s probably the best 200 freestyler in the world. He could probably put up one of the best times that we\u2019ve seen.
