I: Virginia, North Carolina Split"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Jan. 25.  VIRGINIA and North Carolina swapped victories in ACC action in Charlottesville today.  Virginia won the men&#39;s meet while North Carolina took the women&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s Meet<\/b><br \/>\nTHE ninth-ranked Virginia men&#39;s swimming and diving team won 13 of 16 events in registering a 198-102 victory over 20th-ranked North Carolina today in Atlantic Coast Conference swimming action at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center.  <\/p>\n<p>First-year Francis Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa.\/<br \/>\nGermantown Academy) helped lead the Cavaliers to the victory by winning the 500 and 1000 freestyles.  Crippen&#39;s time of 8:55.69 in the 1000 free set ACC, school and pool records.  <\/p>\n<p>With the victory, UVa improves 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the ACC, while the Tar Heels drop to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Crippen, four other Cavaliers were multiple event winners.  Third-years Luke Wagner (Englewood, Colo.\/Regis Jesuit) and Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va.\/Bolles School) both swam in three UVa wins, while second-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md.\/Walter Johnson) and third-year Pete Amstutz (St. Joseph, Mich.\/St. Joseph) both recorded a pair of individual event victories.<\/p>\n<p>The foursome of Wagner, fourth-year Jon Baird (Nashville, Tenn.\/Montgomery Bell Academy), fourth-year Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand\/Germantown Academy) and Anderson got UVa off to a good start by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:32.08 as Anderson came from behind to out-touch UNC&#39;s Michael Chenier.<\/p>\n<p>Crippen then set the ACC, school and pool records in the 1000 free with his time of 8:55.69.  Crippen&#39;s current teammate Ian Prichard held the former record in the 1000 free with a time of 8:59.12 set in 2001. <\/p>\n<p>Fourth-year Dan DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y.\/Great Neck South) was second in the 1000 free (9:14.14).  Later in the meet, Crippen also took the top spot in the 500 free with a time of 4:23.78.  <\/p>\n<p>Prichard won the third event of the meet, the 200 free, with a time of 1:39.56 and was also runner-up to Crippen in the 500 free (4:27.75).<\/p>\n<p>North Carolina&#39;s Eddy Matkovich and Sean Quinn won the next two events, the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, respectively.  Matkovich beat Wagner in the 100 back by 18 hundredths of a second with his time of 50.27. Quinn took the 100 breast in a time of 56.15.  <\/p>\n<p>Wagner came back to lead at top-three Cavalier sweep in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:46.94.  Second-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va.\/Goochland) was second in the 200 back (1:49.39) and fourth-year Michael Wheeler (Lisbon, Md.\/McDonogh) was third (1:51.46).<\/p>\n<p>Raab won the 200 butterfly, the first of his two victories, with a time of 1:46.14.  He earned a sweep of the two butterfly events as he touched in 49.12 in the 100 fly.  <\/p>\n<p>Anderson captured his two individual wins in the 50 and 100 frees.  He touched in 20.31 in capturing the 50 free and then led a top-three UVa sweep in the 100 free with a winning time of 45.05.  Third-year Jon Haag (Ashland, Ohio\/Ashland) was runner-up to Anderson in the 50 and 100 frees with times of 21.05 and 46.13, respectively, and first-year Ethan McCoy (McMinnville, Ore.\/McMinnville) was third in the 100 free (46.56). <\/p>\n<p>Amstutz swept the diving competition with scores of 334.13 on the one-meter board and 328.88 on the three-meter board.  <\/p>\n<p>Greenwood rounded out UVa&#39;s individual event winners as he clocked a time of 3:54.03 in the 400 individual medley.  Crippen was second in the 400 I.M. in a time of 3:55.49.  <\/p>\n<p>The Cavaliers closed out the meet by winning the 400 freestyle in 3:01.99.  Haag, Wagner, McCoy and Anderson swam legs on the winning relay.<\/p>\n<p>The Cavaliers return to action Sunday (January 26) when they host Clemson at 12 noon at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center.  The one-meter diving competition will begin at 10:45 a.m.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s Meet<\/b><br \/>\nTHE 11th-ranked North Carolina women&#39;s swimming and diving team won 11 of 16 events to post a 171-129 victory over 12th-ranked Virginia Saturday (January 25) at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center.  <\/p>\n<p>The Cavaliers won two of the first four events, but North Carolina won the next seven events to jump out to an insurmountable lead.<\/p>\n<p>After North Carolina out-touched UVa in the 200 medley relay to open the meet, Virginia first-year Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md.\/Good Counsel) led a top-three Virginia sweep in the 1000 free with a winning time of 9:50.41.  Fourth-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C.\/<br \/>\nProvidence) was second in 9:52.67, while third-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga.\/Marist School) was third (9:56.16).  <\/p>\n<p>First-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa.\/Springside School) earned UVa&#39;s second win of the meet as she touched in 55.16 to win the 100 backstroke.<\/p>\n<p>Lane came from behind in the final 25 yards to win the 500 freestyle for the Cavaliers&#39; third victory of the meet.  Lane posted a season-best time of 4:49.35 in the 500.  <\/p>\n<p>Fourth-year Alison Sharp (Newtown, Pa.\/Council Rock) won the three-meter diving competition with a total of 304.43 points.  She was also second in the one-meter competition with 259.20 points.  <\/p>\n<p>Fourth-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia\/<br \/>\nTrinity Prep) rounded out UVa&#39;s event winners as she took the top spot in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:04.57.<\/p>\n<p>Third-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla.\/Trinity Prep) and second-year Andrea Georoff (Winter Park, Fla.\/Trinity Prep) both had a pair of second-place finishes in the meet for Virginia.  Dykehouse was second in the 200 free with a NCAA &quot;B&quot; time of 1:49.44 and was runner-up in the 100 butterfly (56.47).  Georoff was second in the 50 free (23.39) and 100 free 51.57.<\/p>\n<p>Junior Jessi Perruquet led the Tar Heels to the victory with individual victories in the 100 and 200 freestyles and she also anchored UNC&#39;s winning 200 medley and 400 free relay teams.  Perruquet posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:47.43 in winning the 200 freestyle and also took the top spot in the 100 freestyle (50.26).  She anchored the Tar Heels&#39; winning 200 medley relay (1:43.62) as well as the 400 free relay that touched first in 3:24.71.  <\/p>\n<p>Senior Christy Watkins also swam on North Carolina&#39;s winning 200 medley and 400 free relay teams.  She won the 50 free and 100 butterfly with times of 23.21 and 56.20, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The Cavaliers return to action Sunday (January 26) when they host Clemson at 12 noon at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center.
