{"id":482665,"date":"2021-07-24T20:50:41","date_gmt":"2021-07-25T03:50:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=482665"},"modified":"2021-07-24T21:39:42","modified_gmt":"2021-07-25T04:39:42","slug":"zhang-yufei-takes-top-seed-into-100-fly-final-marie-wattel-makes-move","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/zhang-yufei-takes-top-seed-into-100-fly-final-marie-wattel-makes-move\/","title":{"rendered":"Olympics: Zhang Yufei Takes Top Seed into 100 Fly Final; Marie Wattel Makes Move"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Zhang Yufei Takes Top Seed into 100 Fly Final; Marie Wattel Makes Move<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>After the prelims of the women\u2019s 100 butterfly, it looked like five swimmers would have a shot at not only winning, but breaking the world record at the Tokyo Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>After the semifinals, those five are still in play, but might not be in the order that was expected.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s <strong>Zhang Yufei<\/strong> took the top seed in 55.89, within striking distance of the world record set by Sweden\u2019s <strong>Sarah<\/strong> <strong>Sjostrom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>France\u2019s <strong>Marie Wattel<\/strong> used a late surge to win the first heat and take the second seed overall at 56.16, behind\u00a0 ahead of Australia\u2019s <strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong> (56.33), Sjostrom (56.40), U.S. teen and American record holder <strong>Torri Huske<\/strong> (56.51), Canada\u2019s <strong>Maggie<\/strong> <strong>MacNeil<\/strong> (56.56), former NCAA champion from Sweden <strong>Louise Hansson<\/strong> (56.92) and Belarus\u2019 <strong>Anastasiya Shkurdai<\/strong> (57.19).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Really surprised, of course. Huge PB for me. I feel like I did a good start and when I saw I was next to Torri (Huske), I thought I\u2019m doing a good race. And I fought as hard as I could and I didn\u2019t hold anything, and I went maximum effort. And I wanted to enjoy the moment because it\u2019s not very often you can be in this environment, so I wanted to do the best I could do and I\u2019m so surprised,&#8221; Wattell said.<\/p>\n<p>It was a little different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-zhang-yufei-emma-mckeon-threaten-world-record-tie-for-top-seed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">order than prelims<\/a>, though the top contenders remain the same, with the addition of Wattel who made a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Huske remained optimistic heading into finals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I try to pull it back, I feel like sometimes it kind of backfires. I kind of just go out relax, but it always ends up being pretty fast because of the adrenaline, and I try to come back as fast as I can,&#8221; Huske said. &#8220;I think it\u2019s going to be pretty similar to semis. It was nice seeing what it was like today and how they announce the names and stuff to get a feel for what it\u2019s going to be like, so I\u2019m excited.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Emma McKeon and Zhang Yufei were both clocked at 55.82 in prelims to tie for the top seed, and Sjostrom\u2019s look of shock after recording her third-place time of 56.18 showed that she didn\u2019t expect to be that quick so soon after recovering from a fractured elbow.
