Facing surgery, an expected three-month rehab and an injury like she\u2019d never experienced in her stellar career, doubt naturally crept in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never had a hard injury like this before, so I didn\u2019t know anything about this fracture,\u201d Sjostrom said. \u201cI didn\u2019t know how long it could take to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer Sjostrom got Saturday night: Quicker than just about anyone, including her, imagined.<\/p>\n<p>Sjostrom turned in a rock-solid first day at the Olympics. The Swedish superstar went 56.18 in the women\u2019s 100 butterfly, taking the third seed in Sunday\u2019s semifinals. She led off the Swedish 400 free relay with a leg of 52.95, enough of a cushion to get Sweden into the final as the eighth and final seed.<\/p>\n<p>Sjostrom had her doubts on the way to Tokyo. But Saturday\u2019s performance quieted them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I started swimming again after my surgery, I was like, I\u2019m never ever going to swim again,\u201d she said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t physically take a stroke in the water. My arm just couldn\u2019t do anything. It\u2019s great to do this kind of comeback.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sjostrom is the reigning Olympic champion in the 100 fly. She owns the Olympic record, the world record and four World Championships in the event. But when the 27-year-old went 57.7 in Rome <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/david-verraszto-thunders-to-409-57-in-400im-sarah-sjostrom-wins-first-100-fly-of-comeback\/\">at Sette Colli in June<\/a> and \u201cbarely finished the race,\u201d in her words, she was contemplating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sarah-sjostrom-contemplating-olympic-program-defense-of-100-butterfly-title-still-uncertain\/\">whether that event would even make her Tokyo program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday, she zoomed in with a 56.18, seven tenths off her world record but her fastest time in four years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday I felt extremely strong and it was my best time in like four years,\u201d she said. \u201cObviously that\u2019s a big surprise after the preparations I\u2019ve had the last six months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It may take a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-zhang-yufei-emma-mckeon-threaten-world-record-tie-for-top-seed\/\">world record to win that event<\/a>. <strong>Zhang Yufei<\/strong> of China and Australia\u2019s <strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong> both went 55.82 in the prelims, and <strong>Torri Huske<\/strong> was ahead of Sjostrom most of the way in their joust before finishing in 56.29. But Sjostrom will have a say in where the medals, including gold, go.<\/p>\n<p>In the relay, her time of 52.95 was the second-fastest split in her heat, trailing only <strong>Anna Hopkin<\/strong> of Great Britain (52.65), though Hopkin had a relay start as an aid. Sjostrom\u2019s time was the quickest flat-start time of the 15 in the race, and it gets her and the team of <strong>Michelle Coleman, Louise Hansson<\/strong> and <strong>Sara Junevik<\/strong> another swim. (That comes at the expense of Japan and <strong>Rikako Ikee<\/strong> \u2013 who split a team-best 53.63 as the Japanese went 3:36.20.)<\/p>\n<p>Sjostrom isn\u2019t afraid to say she wouldn\u2019t mind an extra month or two to heal and regain strength. But she\u2019s making due, and Saturday\u2019s performance puts the injury further in the rearview mirror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think about it at all when I race,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel good and I feel strong.
