At the end of the evening, the number of medals won by <strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> will be known, along with which nation tops the medals chart. Here is what Swimming World predicts for the last five events. All picks were made prior to the start of the Games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Editor\u2019s Note:<\/strong> Tokyo is 13 hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time (e.g., New York) and 16 hours ahead of Pacific Daylight Time (e.g., Los Angeles). This year\u2019s Olympic finals (and semifinals) will be swum at Tokyo in the morning, with prelims swum the previous evening. The ushering in of a global new guard is slower to arrive.<\/p>\n<p>The United States claimed two places on the podium in Rio, but neither<strong> Anthony Ervin<\/strong> nor bronze medalist <strong>Nathan Adrian<\/strong> survived Olympic Trials this time, going by the wayside in favor of young stars <strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> and <strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Globally, though, the same turnover hasn\u2019t occurred. <strong>Florent Manaoudou<\/strong>, <strong>Bruno Fratus<\/strong> and <strong>Benjamin Proud &#8211; <\/strong>all top-six finishers in Rio &#8211; remain in the picture, despite the former two being in their 30s. Even the \u201cyoung\u201d competitors &#8211; 29-year-old <strong>Vlad<\/strong> <strong>Morozov<\/strong> and 27-year-old <strong>Kristian Gokolomeev &#8211; <\/strong>aren\u2019t exactly young.<\/p>\n<p>The most salient question appears to be if Dressel, who went 21.04 at the recent Trials, can erase <strong>Cesar Cielo\u2019s<\/strong> world record. He\u2019s the favorite for gold, with Proud not far behind. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Defending champion <strong>Pernille Blume<\/strong> shocked the world when she touched first in Rio, winning Denmark\u2019s first swimming gold medal since 1948. However, Blume has not reached the podium internationally since then, finishing in fourth at the last two World Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Reigning world champ <strong>Simone Manuel<\/strong> has not quite swum to expectations in 2021, having been diagnosed with overtraining syndrome earlier this year, preventing her from training at the same level as she did in 2016. Also, <strong>Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong>, the 2017 world champ and world record holder, sustained an elbow injury earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>That leaves the door open for two veterans: Australia\u2019s <strong>Cate Campbell<\/strong>, who is looking for her first individual gold at the Olympics, and <strong>Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong> of the Netherlands, who won the gold medal in 2012. Kraemer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The reigning gold medalist, <strong>Gregorio Paltrinieri<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/gregorio-paltrinieri-diagnosed-with-mononucleosis-tokyo-status-unknown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was diagnosed with mononucleosis<\/a> a month before the Tokyo Games were scheduled to begin, clouding the field a little bit and definitely putting a road block in his path toward repeating as Olympic champion.<br \/>\nGermany\u2019s <strong>Florian Wellbrock<\/strong> has the top time in the world this year at 14:36.45, while Ukraine\u2019s <strong>Mykhailo Romanchuk<\/strong> is next at 14:39.89, ahead of Paltrinieri (14:40.38).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, USA\u2019s <strong>Bobby Finke<\/strong> dominated at the U.S. Trials and sits at 14:46.06 without being pushed down the stretch. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The American women have been dominant in the 400 medley relay since 2016, and have set world records in the event at the last two World Championships. The common factor on these relays is <strong>Lilly King<\/strong>, who has been the dominant 100 breaststroker in the world since 2016. Now 24, King projects to have more than a second advantage over the breaststroker of any other top country in the medley relays.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. relay should also feature <strong>Regan Smith<\/strong>, the former world record holder in the 100 back, as well as teenage butterfly star <strong>Torri<\/strong> <strong>Huske<\/strong> and likely <strong>Abbey Weitzeil<\/strong> on the anchor leg.<\/p>\n<p>The Australians have <strong>Kaylee McKeown<\/strong>, the 100 backstroke world-record holder, with <strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong> (butterfly) and <strong>Cate<\/strong> <strong>Campbell<\/strong> (freestyle) coming home hard. Canada gets a huge boost from 100 back world champion <strong>Kylie Masse<\/strong> and 100 fly world champion <strong>Maggie MacNeil<\/strong>. China, Great Britain and potentially Sweden could also contend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Predictions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gold:<\/strong> United States<br \/>\n<strong>Silver:<\/strong> Australia<br \/>\n<strong>Bronze:<\/strong> Canada<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 400 Medley Relay<\/h3>\n<p><strong>World Record:<\/strong> United States (Aaron Peirsol, Eric Shanteau, Michael Phelps, David Walters) &#8211; Rome 8-2-09 &#8211; 3:27.28<br \/>\n<strong>2016 Olympic Champion:<\/strong> United States (Ryan Murphy, Cody Miller, Michael Phelps, Nathan Adrian) &#8211; 3:27.95<\/p>\n<p>The United States has never lost the medley relay in Olympic competition, going a perfect 14-for-14 since the event\u2019s debut in 1960. The only time Team USA didn\u2019t capture gold was in 1980, when the United States boycotted the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.
