Andrew discussed his decision to not be vaccinated in a virtual media session from the Olympic team&#8217;s training camp in Hawaii on July 8. Andrew said that prior to Olympic Trials, he &#8220;didn\u2019t want to put anything in my body that I didn\u2019t know how I would potentially react to,&#8221; but he then claimed that he had no plans to be vaccinated in the future.<\/p>\n<p>DiRado, who retired after claiming an upset gold medal in the women&#8217;s 200 backstroke at the Rio Olympics in one of the most stunning moments of those Games, wrote that &#8220;<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">As a former member of Team USA, I&#8217;m disappointed in <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\"><a class=\"css-4rbku5 css-18t94o4 css-901oao css-16my406 r-1n1174f r-1loqt21 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SwimmerMichael\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@SwimmerMichael<\/a><\/span>&#8216;s decision to attend the Olympics unvaccinated and his reasoning behind it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She then posted a thread of eight tweets that detailed her three main issues with Andrew&#8217;s stance against vaccination. She discussed that it would be honoring the American scientists who developed the COVID-19 vaccines by getting the shots, and she explained that in her experience on the Olympic team, athletes did everything they could to put the U.S. team&#8217;s interests ahead of their own. She believed that getting vaccinated and minimizing risk during the Tokyo Games should have been the highest priority for each swimmer.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, DiRado quoted a biblical passage to emphasize her point about selflessness. He also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-olympic-trials-michael-andrew-blazes-to-victory-in-200-medley-chase-kalisz-is-tokyo-bound\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won the 200 IM<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-olympic-trials-michael-andrew-blazes-to-victory-in-200-medley-chase-kalisz-is-tokyo-bound\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted the fastest time in the world in that event<\/a>, and he also qualified for the Olympic team in the 50 free by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/caeleb-dressel-ties-american-record-in-50-free-michael-andrew-takes-second-spot-ahead-of-nathan-adrian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">finishing second to\u00a0<strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to Olympic Trials, USA Swimming CEO\u00a0<strong>Tim Hinchey\u00a0<\/strong>said that he believed the majority of the U.S. national team had been vaccinated. &#8220;Last time I talked to (national team director) <strong>Lindsay <\/strong>(<strong>Mintenko<\/strong>), I think we were somewhere around 90 percent our national team that had been vaccinated,&#8221; Hinchey said. Most members of the Olympic team have not commented publicly on their vaccination status, but of the few that have, Andrew is the only one to announce he is not vaccinated. An unvaccinated athlete that came into contact with a person with a confirmed case of COVID-19 at the Olympics would be subject to contact tracing protocols, while vaccinated athletes would not.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the swimming community, there has been sparse reaction to Andrew&#8217;s vaccination status thus far.
