And now it\u2019s time to see who might win medals in the 35 swimming events\u2014three more than in 2016, with the debut of the women\u2019s 1500 freestyle, men\u2019s 800 freestyle and the mixed 4&#215;100 medley relay. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>En route to victory at the United States Trials, <strong>Chase Kalisz<\/strong> inched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/us-olympic-trials-deja-vu-chase-kalisz-jay-litherland-to-represent-team-usa-in-400-im-in-tokyo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closer to the level that made him the 2017 world champion<\/a>. The silver medalist at the 2016 Olympics, Kalisz cracked the 4:10 barrier at Trials and figures to drop time in Tokyo. European champion and world junior record holder <strong>Ilya Borodin<\/strong> of Russia was expected to contend, but a positive COVID-19 test caused his withdrawal from the Games.<\/p>\n<p>France\u2019s <strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong> recently went sub-4:10 and is a rising force, while American <strong>Jay Litherland<\/strong> can contend for the podium if he is within striking distance heading into the freestyle leg. Defending champion <strong>Mack Horton<\/strong> of Australia missed out on qualifying after not finishing in the top two at the Australian Trials. In Rio at age 27, she dominated the race by nearly five seconds, winning her first Olympic gold medal and destroying all the records in the process.<\/p>\n<p>She went on to win the event at the next two World Championships in 2017 and 2019, but currently, she has only has the fifth fastest time in the world behind four Americans.
