Olympic Minister\u00a0<strong>Tamayo Marukawa<\/strong>\u00a0has confirmed that fans will be banned from all Olympic venues in response to the new coronavirus state of emergency, according to a report from\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidethegames.biz\/articles\/1109917\/tokyo-2020-no-fans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inside The Games<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Venues were originally going to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/the-week-that-was-tokyo-olympics-to-take-place-with-no-overseas-spectators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closed to international spectators<\/a>, with Japanese citizens allowed to fill each stadium to 50% capacity. But that ruling was under the assumption that the COVID-19 pandemic would be under control in Japan. The country is currently under its latest \u201cstate of emergency,\u201d meaning that Prime Minister\u00a0<strong>Yoshihide Suga<\/strong>\u00a0will keep the city under its toughest COVID restrictions through August 12, which is a little less than a week after the conclusion of the Games. Competing in the Foro Italico that hosted the 1994 and 2009 World Championships, the 16-year-old from Romania won the men\u2019s 100 free in 47.30, which knocked a quarter-second off\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/david-popovici-sets-wjr-47-56-in-100-free-to-go-fourth-in-rankings-at-european-junior-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his own world junior record of 47.56 set two days earlier<\/a>\u00a0as the leadoff leg on his country\u2019s 400 free relay. That performance made Popovici the fastest man in the world for 2021, surpassing the 47.31 that Russia\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Kliment Kolesnikov<\/strong>\u00a0swam to win the event at the European Championships in May. Popovici himself was sixth in that race in 48.08, so he has improved his lifetime best by almost eight tenths in two months.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the global top five includes world champion\u00a0<strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong>, Italy\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Alessandro Miressi<\/strong>\u00a0and defending Olympic gold medalist\u00a0<strong>Kyle Chalmers<\/strong>, so that\u2019s an elite group Popovici now sits ahead of just three weeks before the 100 free Olympic final.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/after-world-junior-record-in-100-free-watch-out-for-david-popovici-in-tokyo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">He has quickly jumped into contention for an Olympic medal<\/a>\u00a0that absolutely no one saw coming even a week ago, and he could post another impressive mark in the 200 free in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am excited because of today\u2019s result,\u201d Popovici said, per\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.len.eu\/?p=18250\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LEN<\/a>. \u201cI knew I was able to swim a time like this. This also confirms that I am training well for Tokyo. I am not going to stop here. I am aiming for the Olympic podium. I am glad that my parents were here tonight and could see my swim. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has altered its Rule 50 with updated guidelines, endorsed by FINA, that ease some of the restrictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Under\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/athlete365\/app\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Rule-50.2-Guidelines-Olympic-Games-Tokyo-2020-Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">Rule 50 new guidance<\/a>\u00a0athletes will be able to express their views on the field of play before competition so long is it is not targeted against people, not disruptive and not otherwise prohibited by national Olympic committees or international federations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Expressions and protests during competition, in the Olympic village and during ceremonies \u2014 including medal, opening and closing ceremonies \u2014 remain against\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ioc-rule-50-is-slap-in-the-face-to-origins-of-olympism-and-games-founder-pierre-de-coubertin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rule 50<\/a>\u00a0baring \u201cpolitical, religious or racial propaganda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following discussions with the IOC, the International Swimming Federation (FINA) has confirmed a wide range of opportunities for athlete self-expression at the aquatics competitions of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Albiero was instrumental in Louisville\u2019s 200 medley relay\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/louisville-cardinals-take-first-ever-ncaa-relay-title-in-school-history-with-200-medley-relay-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NCAA title<\/a>\u00a0this year, swimming the butterfly leg for the school\u2019s first relay national title in school history. The next day, he won the school\u2019s first ever NCAA title in the 200 butterfly in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/nick-albiero-etches-his-name-into-louisville-history-books-with-emotional-200-butterfy-ncaa-title\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emotional win<\/a> in what was believed to be his final swim for the school.<\/p>\n<p>Cal\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Trenton<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Julian<\/strong>, who finished second, third and fourth individually at the 2021 NCAA championships and then qualified for the final in three events at the U.S. Olympic Trials, will be returning to Berkeley for a fifth year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA announced that all winter sport athletes during the 2020-2021 year would be allowed an extra year of athletic eligibility, and Julian decided to take advantage of that change.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe fifth year made the most sense to me because I still had some classes left in the fall, which would have conflicted with going pro or ISL,\u201d he said. \u201cBeing with the team and training with them through the fall and then through the spring made the most sense, and it\u2019s something I wanted to do to kind of stay with that team through another semester where it will be a little more of that normal atmosphere in training.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Week That Was sponsored by Suitmate.
