MINNESOTA concluded its two-day dual meet against North Carolina State yesterday by sweeping the Wolfpack. Minnesota trailed NC State in the men&#8217;s meet after Friday night&#8217;s competition but came roaring back to take the win. The Golden Gopher women are now 7-0 this season in dual meets, while the Minnesota men are now 6-1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Minnesota Women&#8217;s Press Release<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After day one of the dual meet against North Carolina State the Golden Gophers were up 100-83. Saturday&#8217;s conclusion of the meet included: 200 medley relay, 3 meter diving, 400 IM, 100 free, 200 back, 100 fly, 500 free, 200 breast, and the 400 free relay.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to yesterday, Minnesota&#8217;s Sarah McCrady took first in the women&#8217;s 3 meter diving. She scored a 341.40 followed by two more Gophers for second and third place in addition to first.<\/p>\n<p>The Gopher women gave up some points to N.C. State during the beginning of day two. However men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s head coach Kelly Kremer described Carl Newenhouse&#8217;s gold finish in the 200-yard backstroke as the race that really gave both the Gopher men and women the momentum to win the dual meet.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Weiland took first in the 100-yard fly with a time of 53.36.<\/p>\n<p>In the 500-yard freestyle, Kiera Janzen took first followed by Jessica Plant with 4:53.15.Distance freestyle is once again proving to be a strong spot for Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>Kierra Smith took first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:12.29, finishing nearly six seconds faster than N.C. State. &#8220;She took charge in the 200 breast from start to finish was dynamite,&#8221; Coach Kremer.<\/p>\n<p>The 400-free relay resulted in another Gopher `W&#8217;. The relay team of Rebecca Weiland, Lauren Votava, Tori Simenec, and Blake Zeiger took first with a time of 3:21.65, that men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s head coach Kelly Kremer said he couldn&#8217;t be happier with them ending the meet.<\/p>\n<p>The Minnesota women&#8217;s swimming and diving 2013-2014 record improves to 7-0.<\/p>\n<p>After the meet Coach Kremer stated, &#8220;We are really lucky to have a team like N.C. State come in this time of the year, they are getting ready for their championship season just like we are. Our coaching staff is so proud of how we responded today and made things happen. They responded just like you want a championship team respond.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Next Meet: Minnesota heads to West Lafayette, Indiana next weekend for a triple B1G dual. The Gophers will take on Wisconsin and Purdue. The meet will begin on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 6:00pm CT, and will continue on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 12:00pm CT.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Minnesota Men&#8217;s Press Release<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After day one of the dual meet against North Carolina State the Golden Gophers were down one point 92-93. Saturday\u2019s conclusion of the meet included: 200 medley relay, 1 meter diving, 400 IM, 100 free, 200 back, 100 fly, 500 free, 200 breast, and the 400 free relay.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, Manny Pollard led the Gopher men\u2019s diving on the one-meter boards with a score of 378.98. Minnesota went 1-2-3 in the event.<\/p>\n<p>Men\u2019s and women\u2019s head coach Kelly Kremer described Carl Newenhouse\u2019s gold finish in the 200-yard backstroke as the race that really gave Minnesota momentum to win the meet against N.C. State. Newenhouse had a time of 1:46.71.<\/p>\n<p>Kyler Van Swol finished first with a 46.90 in the 100-yard butterfly.<\/p>\n<p>The Minnesota men dominated the 500-yard freestyle taking first, second, and third against the Wolfpack. CJ Smith led the group with a 4:27.24, followed by Ben Bravence and Logan Redondo.<\/p>\n<p>Nick Hatanaka took first in the 200-yard breaststroke for Minnesota with a time of 2:02.56. Taking third was Jakub Maly with a 2:03.10.<\/p>\n<p>The Gophers dropped the 400-yard freestyle relay to N.C. State, but the Gophers second place finish was enough to secure the meet win.<\/p>\n<p>The Minnesota men\u2019s swimming and diving 2013-2014 record improves to 6-1.<\/p>\n<p>After the meet Coach Kremer stated, \u201cWe are really lucky to have a team like N.C. The 21st-ranked men\u2019s squad was defeated by the 14th-ranked Golden Gophers, 192-159, while the Wolfpack women\u2019s team fell to No. 13 Minnesota, 190-156.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was definitely a hard fought battle today against a very strong opponent in Minnesota,\u201d said head coach Braden Holloway. \u201cI am proud of our group. We came in with a smaller travel squad and went toe-to-toe with a really good team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NC State\u2019s women\u2019s team now owns a record of 6-3 for the season, while the men\u2019s squad falls to 4-4. Minnesota improves to 6-1 on the men\u2019s side and its women\u2019s team remains undefeated at 7-0.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the weekend, the Wolfpack captured five of eight relay events and combined to win nine individual titles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had more of a team effort today,\u201d Holloway said. \u201cWe have progressively gotten better this season and I think today was another step forward. Overall, it was our best performance as a team. Obviously, it hurts coming out with a loss, but we\u2019ll learn from this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The day opened with State capturing the men\u2019s and women\u2019s 200 medley relay. On the women\u2019s side, the team of Zina Grogg, Lauren Poli, Ashlyn Koletic and Riki Bonnema earned State\u2019s first victory of the day with a time of 1:40.72. The quartet of Andreas Schiellerup, Derek Hren, Barrett Miesfeld and Jonathan Boffa followed suit on the men\u2019s side with a first place finish in a time of 1:27.98.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Kelsey Liu posted the first individual victory of the day for the Wolfpack women\u2019s squad in the 400 IM, as the North Potomac, Md., native finished with a time of 4:23.02.<\/p>\n<p>In the 200 backstroke, Zevnik and Kaitlin Mills finished first and second, respectively. Zevnik cruised to a first place finish in a time of 1:59.52, while Mills followed in second with a time of 2:02.34.<\/p>\n<p>On the men\u2019s side, State recorded a one-two finish in the 100 freestyle, as Boffa tapped the wall first in 43.95 and David Williams followed in second in a time of 44.42.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have some fine tuning that we need to do,\u201d Holloway said. We\u2019re still a little sloppy in a few areas that we need to execute better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In diving, freshman Grant Saale finished the three-meter competition with a season-best score of 305.85.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant [Saale], the only diver to travel with us, represented the men\u2019s team well,\u201d Holloway said. \u201cHe performed a dive that he had not previously done in competition and that went well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Up next, the Pack will make the short trip to Chapel Hill, to take on North Carolina on Friday, Jan. 31 at 5 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/NC_State_vs._Minnesota.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Results For: North Carolina State vs. Minnesota<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, January 26.
