We haven\u2019t given that a thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople were chatting at Europeans about a survey about how a massive percentage of people in Japan don\u2019t want it to go ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t spoken about anything like that. Kraemer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It sparked ugly aggression from Sun who confronted Scott, shouting \u201cyou\u2019re a loser, I\u2019m a winner\u201d in his face.<\/p>\n<p>That followed <strong>Mack Horton\u2019<\/strong>s similar refusal after the 400 free and stemmed from Sun\u2019s presence in Gwangju despite him having a CAS hearing looming after a clash with anti-doping testers during which a vial of his blood was smashed with a hammer.<\/p>\n<p>Scott told Swimming World in a previous interview:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure I\u2019d call it a protest as such. I wanted to do the right thing and support Mack\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The whole tawdry episode came to a conclusion in June when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sun-yang-ban-reduced-but-three-time-champion-will-miss-tokyo-olympics-following-cas-retrial\/\">Sun was given a ban of four years and three months,<\/a> less than the original eight-year suspension but one that will nonetheless rule him out of Tokyo and the defence of his 200 free crown.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking before the final outcome of whether the ongoing nature of the case was exasperating, Scott was good-natured yet firm, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s probably more frustrating that I keep getting asked about something I can\u2019t control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s completely out of my hands, I haven&#8217;t even thought about it, I\u2019ve not looked at it, I don\u2019t know anything about it, so yeah, that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Recalling Rio And Passing On Knowledge<\/h3>\n<p>Rewind five years and Scott, a Speedo swimmer, was heading to his first Games in Rio de Janeiro aged 19.<\/p>\n<p>There he won silvers \u2013 both behind the USA &#8211; in the 4&#215;200 free and the medley relay, anchoring them in 47.62.<\/p>\n<p>Scott recalled:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI think I was just overwhelmed by the amount of support that I had at hand with British Swimming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything is upped that Olympic year and even more so from the trials onwards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was part of the Stirling group that went out there: we had <strong>Robbie (Renwick)<\/strong> &#8211; that was his third Olympics, <strong>(Craig) Benson<\/strong>\u2019s second, <strong>Ross (Murdoch)<\/strong> had international medals since 2014 at Commies and 2015 (World Championships) in the 100 breaststroke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was in pretty good hands in terms of looking around the group and asking them different questions about what to expect or does it matter if you go to kitting out or does it matter if you do this or that. 2021 British Swimming Selection Trials\" width=\"323\" height=\"231\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-470027\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Duncan Scott: Photo Courtesy: Georgie Kerr, British Swimming<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the intervening years Scott has won three world medals \u2013 one of each colour \u2013 five gold and four European silvers and a haul of six medals, including 100 free gold, at the Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n<p>A wealth of silverware and a ton of knowledge for his younger or less experienced team-mates to draw upon, although he laughed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cUnfortunately I act like one of them so no-one really comes up to me asking for stuff!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest a lot of the Stirling guys who are going are pretty similar ages to myself and they have had quite a lot of international experience anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I guess it\u2019s more the little things we speak about \u2013 doing things slightly differently with the morning finals and different preparations with travel; going across to Japan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKD (<strong>Kathleen Dawson<\/strong>) has had quite a lot of experience internationally anyway with Commies and she was a European medallist back in 2016 so she has experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s maybe the hype around the Games that is going to be slightly different to her this time and it\u2019s just about how she manages that.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>A Constant Quest For Improvement At Stirling<\/h3>\n<p>Scott has trained at Stirling since 2015, the same year he won gold at the worlds in <strong>Kazan, Russia,<\/strong> after swimming the 4&#215;200 heats when the youngest man on the British team.<\/p>\n<p>Tigg, <strong>Brad Hay<\/strong> and <strong>Josh Williamson<\/strong> form the coaching team with the former at its head.<\/p>\n<p>Five Stirling swimmers among a 30-strong British squad will travel to Tokyo with Scott joined by <strong>Kathleen Dawson, Ross Murdoch, Cassie Wild<\/strong> and <strong>Aimee Willmott<\/strong>, who\u2019ll be competing in her third Games before she bows out of the sport.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_451516\" style=\"width: 339px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-451516\" data-attachment-id=\"451516\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/duncan-scott-on-blocking-out-the-noise-recalling-rio-and-the-constant-quest-to-improve\/duncan-scott-london-roar-isl-by-mike-lewis-5\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Duncan-Scott-London-Roar-ISL-by-Mike-Lewis-D5D_8330-scaled.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"2560,1707\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;4&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;MIKE LEWIS&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;NIKON D5&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Duncan Scott (photo: &lt;a href=\\&quot;http:\\\/\\\/olavistaphotography.com\\\/\\&quot; 11 of them gold &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/european-championships-day-7-finals-britain-finish-top-of-the-medal-table-after-medley-victories\/\">at the European Championships in Budapest,<\/a> all the more notable given they were not fully rested.<\/p>\n<p>Scott came away with two golds and three silver medals, including the 200 free behind Malyutin and ahead of team-mate <strong>Tom Dean<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There was also sixth place in the 200IM before he anchored the 4&#215;200 relay to silver just 30 minutes later, a source of satisfaction.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cReally happy with the 200IM\/4&#215;2 double. First time I\u2019d done 2 200s internationally on the same night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt filled me with confidence in the 4&#215;2. 2021 British Swimming Selection Trials\" width=\"315\" height=\"225\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-469821\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Duncan Scott: Photo Courtesy: Georgie Kerr<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Scott travels to Tokyo top of the 200 free world rankings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/duncan-scott-breaks-british-200-free-record-in-144-47-tom-dean-also-goes-under-old-mark\/\">with his 1:44.47 from the British trials in April<\/a> elevating him to ninth all-time, one place ahead of Dean who bypassed 1:45 altogether in 1:44.58.<\/p>\n<p>Three other men have also gone 1:44 this year in the form of <strong>Katsuhiro Matsumoto<\/strong> (1:44.65), Malyutin (1:44.79) and <strong>Hwang Sunwoo<\/strong> (1:44.96) with a new champion to be crowned in the absence of Sun.<\/p>\n<p>There is also the spectre of Romanian 16-year-old <strong>David Popovici<\/strong> who set about the world junior record books and overall rankings at the <strong>European Junior Championships<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Scott stands second in the 200IM rankings with his time of 1:55.90 bettered only by <strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong>\u2019s 1:55.26 and he has a season\u2019s best of 47.87 in the 100 free, although that provided little satisfaction for him.<\/p>\n<p>Add in the relays and it\u2019s a busy schedule for Scott.<\/p>\n<p>Amid all the hubbub as the clock ticks down, he\u2019ll enjoy some calm and quiet moments when he first visits the <strong>Tokyo Aquatics Centre<\/strong> as he prepares himself for the days ahead.<\/p>\n<p>He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;For me I always like to walk around it, familiarise yourself with the surroundings, I like to go through the call rooms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall room one, sit down; call room two and sit down and then do a walk out as if I\u2019m going out for my race so the first time I go out isn\u2019t the time I\u2019m racing and I\u2019m used to the way they are channelling us through the facility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust getting used to it;
