{"id":480888,"date":"2021-07-07T05:33:02","date_gmt":"2021-07-07T12:33:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=480888"},"modified":"2021-07-07T16:23:02","modified_gmt":"2021-07-07T23:23:02","slug":"swim-ireland-announces-nine-strong-team-for-tokyo-olympics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swim-ireland-announces-nine-strong-team-for-tokyo-olympics\/","title":{"rendered":"Swim Ireland Announces Nine-Strong Team For Tokyo Olympics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Swim Ireland Announces Nine-Strong Team For Tokyo Olympics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Swim Ireland<\/strong> have announced a nine-strong team for <a href=\"https:\/\/tokyo2020.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tokyo<\/a> after official selection by the\u00a0<strong>Olympic Federation of Ireland<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Daniel Wiffen<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Danielle Hill, Ellen Walshe, Darragh Greene, Mona McSharry<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Shane Ryan\u00a0<\/strong>all secured FINA &#8216;A&#8217; times.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally,\u00a0<strong>Finn McGeever<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Jack McMillan<\/strong> have been selected as relay-only athletes in the men\u2019s 4x200m free \u2013 the first time Ireland will compete in an Olympic relay in 49 years and the first men\u2019s relay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The invitation to compete in the men\u2019s 4x100m medley relay was rescinded by FINA, resulting in Ireland\u2019s \u2018relay only\u2019 athlete availability being reduced from four athletes to two as part of this process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They will be joined by <strong>Brendan Hyland<\/strong>, Ireland\u2019s only athlete to receive a FINA \u2018B\u2019 invitation to attend the Games.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With no other FINA \u2018B\u2019 invites received from FINA, Hyland\u2019s invite was ultimately crucial to Ireland being able to compete in the 4&#215;2 which requires at least two athletes qualified in individual events.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fourth member of the relay team will be <strong>Shane Ryan<\/strong>, as under Olympic rules this athlete can only be selected from the three male swimmers on the team who have a FINA \u2018A\u2019 time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, two of the four swimmers &#8211; Jordan Sloan and Gerry Quinn &#8211; whose performances at the <strong>LEN European Championships<\/strong> in May were crucial to ensuring Ireland\u2019s invitation to the 4&#215;200 free relay cannot be selected under Olympic rules.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udca6TEAM IRELAND SWIMMERS SELECTED<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TeamIreland?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TeamIreland<\/a> has officially named the swimmers who will compete in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Tokyo2020?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Tokyo2020<\/a> \ud83d\ude4c<\/p>\n<p>Nine swimmers will compete across thirteen events &#8211; the largest swim team that Ireland has EVER fielded!! \u2618\ufe0f<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NothingInOurWay?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NothingInOurWay<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udd17<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oCY9XrOAL4\">https:\/\/t.co\/oCY9XrOAL4<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PQc7Dtiofg\">pic.twitter.com\/PQc7Dtiofg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Team Ireland (@TeamIreland) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TeamIreland\/status\/1412738201161244674?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 7, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Jon Rudd<\/strong>, National Performance Director and Team Leader for the Games said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis has been the longest-ever Olympic cycle and qualification period that the sport has faced.
