BERKELEY, California, January 25. IN front of a live television audience and a packed house at the Spieker Aquatics Complex, the California Golden Bears made short work of Arizona in dual-meet action, winning the men\u2019s and women\u2019s meets.<\/p>\n
Cal took the women\u2019s meet title with a score of 190-109, while the Golden Bears took the men\u2019s meet, 206-92.<\/p>\n
The first event of the day, the 1000 free, provided major fireworks as Jeremy Bagshaw posted the first sub-9:00 swim of the season with an 8:57.41. It\u2019s Bagshaw\u2019s first time under nine minutes, and puts him third all-time on Cal\u2019s list, behind school record holder Sean Killion (8:54.68) and Daniel Lysaught (8:54.96). It was a 1-2-3 finish in the longer freestyle with Adam Hinshaw (9:12.50) and Jamie Tyrrell (9:28.29) rounding out the top three. Bagshaw cruised through the 500 freestyle later in the meet, just touching out Hinshaw, 4:24.30 to 4:25.68. Michael Haney touched third with a 4:36.25 for another Cal sweep. Janardan Burns posted a 4:29.16, but was entered into the event as an exhibition swimmer.<\/p>\n
Tjasa Oder fired the first shot for Arizona, winning the women\u2019s 1000 free with a 9:57.13, four seconds slower than she swam yesterday against Stanford to place third.<\/p>\n
California posted 1-2-3 finishes in the women\u2019s and men\u2019s 200 freestyle. Rachael Acker (1:47.03), Carolina Piehl (1:48.31) and Elizabeth Pelton (1:48.43) scored major points for Cal, as did Seth Stubblefield (1:37.41), Trent Williams (1:38.49) and Michael Haney (1:40.51) in the men\u2019s event.<\/p>\n
Cal\u2019s backstroke dominance was almost put fully on display today, as Missy Franklin won the 100 back in 53.46, with her teammates placing second through fourth. Stephanie Au (54.08), Cindy Tran (54.39) and Melanie Klaren (55.76) kept Arizona at bay. Bonnie Brandon kept Cal from a sweep of the 200 back, placing second with a 1:56.45 behind Elizabeth Pelton\u2019s 1:55.96 as the only two swimmers under two minutes today.<\/p>\n
The dynamic duo of Ryan Murphy and Jacob Pebley showed off their strengths last weekend in the backstroke at the Arena Grand Prix, finishing in the top four in both events. Today, the two went 1-2 again, as Murphy took the 100 in 46.85 and the 200 in 1:41.88. Though he has been faster in both events this season, the times are stellar for a meet at the end of January. Pebley\u2019s times were fast as well, taking second in the 100 with a 47.92 and second in the 200 with a 1:44.50.<\/p>\n
Marina Garcia had her long streak of wins in the breaststrokes snapped today, as Arizona\u2019s Emma Schoettmer won the 100 breast with a 1:02.27 ahead of Yvette Kong\u2019s 1:02.46 and Garcia\u2019s 1:03.25. Schoettmer also dominated the 200 breast with a 2:13.30 over Garcia\u2019s 2:16.87.<\/p>\n
Franklin scored two other individual event wins today, taking the 100 free with a 48.47 over Margo Geer\u2019s 49.51, and posting a 4:46.79 over former Colorado age-group rival Brandon, who was second with a 4:52.32.<\/p>\n
Kevin Cordes kept new California Bear Chuck Katis at bay in the men\u2019s breaststrokes. Cordes took the 100 in a quick 52.92 to Katis\u2019 53.96 and held off Katis in the 200, 1:56.64 to 157.75.<\/p>\n
Ashley Evans of Arizona got the win over Celina Li in the 200 butterfly, getting to the wall in 2:00.35 ahead of Li\u2019s 2:00.56. It was all California in the men\u2019s 200 fly, with Marcin Tarczynski leading a 1-2-3 sweep with a time of 1:45.99. Will Hamilton (1:46.60) and Dane Stassi (1:48.27) completed the sweep.<\/p>\n
Though she could only muster a fourth-place finish in the 100 free, Kaylin Bing on the 50 free today with a 22.80, keeping Geer from any individual wins today. Geer placed second with a 22.85.<\/p>\n
Cal went 1-2 in the men\u2019s sprint freestyles. Tyler Messerschmidt won the 50 in 19.81 over Tony Cox\u2019s 20.40. And it was Stubblefield who got the double with a 43.99 in the 100 free, followed by Fabio Gimondi\u2019s 44.95.<\/p>\n
Tarczynski came back to sweep the butterfly events with a 47.84 to win the 100 fly, while Tran won the women\u2019s 100 fly with a 54.92 over Arizona\u2019s Evans, who touched in 55.09.<\/p>\n
California swept the 200 IM today, featuring Li (1:59.42), Pelton (2:00.90) and Piehl (2:05.00) in the women\u2019s event. Josh Prenot (1:46.77), Hamilton (1:47.47) and Katis (1.49.84) placed in the top three in the men\u2019s medley.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
