The wait for the second lasted mere hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sajan Prakash<\/strong> made history Saturday by attaining the FINA A standard in the men\u2019s 200 butterfly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/martinenghi-goes-joint-fourth-all-time-in-100br-in-58-29-sjostrom-heads-50-fly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at the Sette Colli Trophy in Rome<\/a>. He was joined on Sunday by <strong>Srihari Nataraj<\/strong> in the men\u2019s 100 backstroke in a special time trial.<\/p>\n<p>The men are the first swimmers from India to ever attain the Olympic A standard in an event.<\/p>\n<p>Prakash made history on Saturday. He went 1:56.38 in the 200 fly, downing his national record of 1:56.96 that was set just last week at the Belgrade Trophy. The automatic qualifying standard is 1:56.48.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have worked very hard for this, and I was confident with the way I had trained,&#8221; Prakash said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outlookindia.com\/newsscroll\/sajan-prakash-creates-history-becomes-firstever-indian-swimmer-to-make-olympic-a-cut\/2109725\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a press release<\/a>. &#8220;This was my last chance, and I knew I had to do it here. I had come so close to the qualifying mark in the previous meets, but my Coach <strong>Pradeep Sir<\/strong> and I planned my tapering in such a way that I would peak at these two events in Serbia and Rome.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am grateful to all the support I have received from SFI, SAI and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS). I believed in myself and my Coach <strong>Pradeep Kumar.<\/strong> Pradeep Sir was the anchor and I owe this to him. So the 20-year-old rose to the occasion by going 53.77 in the men\u2019s 100 backstroke <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/olympics\/summer\/swimming\/story\/_\/id\/31719585\/srihari-nataraj-touches-tokyo-standard-awaits-fina-nod\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on Sunday<\/a>, undercutting the FINA A standard of 53.85, in a time trial.<\/p>\n<p>The Bengaluru native missed the A cut by .05 seconds <a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/en\/news\/swimming-srihari-nataraj-national-record-sette-colli-trophy-2021-results-day-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">during the event Friday in 53.90<\/a>. Nataraj\u2019s first B cut was 54.69 at the 2019 World Junior Championships. The Swimming Federation of India indicated that the time trial is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/sports\/others\/srihari-nataraj-breaches-olympic-a-cut-awaits-fina-s-confirmation-101624815282565-amp.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subject to FINA approval<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">another A Qualification breached !! Srihari Nataraj got a 2nd shot at the olympic A qualification mark in a requested time trial at the Sette Colli meet. Srihari Nataraj swam a 53.77 seconds in the time trial for 100m backstroke achieving the A cut for Tokyo 2020. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/h57yH7OI1p\">pic.twitter.com\/h57yH7OI1p<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 @swimmingfederationofindia (@swimmingfedera1) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/swimmingfedera1\/status\/1409204342389829632?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 27, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Prakash, a 27-year-old native of Kerala, would return <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.ndtv.com\/swimming\/indian-swimmer-sajan-prakash-sets-national-record-in-200m-freestyle-2473689\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunday to set an Indian record<\/a> in the 200 freestyle in 1:49.73. That time downed the national record set by <strong>Virdhawal Khade<\/strong> (1:49.86) at the 2009 Commonwealth Youth Games. It\u2019s Prakash\u2019s third national record in the last month.<\/p>\n<p>The records are part of a surge in Indian swimming, which included <strong>Advait Page<\/strong> setting a national mark in the men\u2019s 1,500 freestyle this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/gabe-castano-ties-fina-a-cut-in-50-free-in-time-trial-at-mission-viejo-swim-meet-of-champions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at the Meet of Champions in Mission Viejo<\/a>. <strong>Kenisha Gupta<\/strong> set the national record in the women\u2019s 100 free at 57.35 at Sette Colli.
