THE No. 24 University of Tennessee women's swimming and diving team fell to the Northwestern Wildcats, 204.5-147.5, on Saturday.

While UT lost the meet, the Lady Vol divers demonstrated their dominance, placing 1-2-3 on both the one- and three-meter springboards.

Sophomore Lauryn McCalley led the way for Tennessee on the three-meter springboard. McCalley won the event with a lifetime-best tally of 326.25, a score that ranks her as the third-best three-meter performer in school history and marks the fifth-highest total ever recorded by a Lady Vol. The Moultrie, Ga., native also placed second on the one-meter springboard with a season-best score of 288.0.

UT senior Jaime Sanger (Plymouth, Minn.), meanwhile, claimed victory on the one-meter with a season-best total of her own, 298.35. Sanger also placed third on the three-meter with a score of 277.35.

Also having success on the boards, junior Kylee Wells (Russiaville, Ind.) grabbed second place on the three-meter (287.85) and third on the one-meter (266.03).

"I feel very pleased with our performance today," UT Diving Coach Dave Parrington said. "Our top three divers performed very consistently. Lauryn has really been working on the bigger, harder dives, which is beginning to pay off."

In the pool, Noelle Bassi continued the impressive start to her Lady Vol career. The freshman from Franklin Lakes, N.J., clocked an event-winning time of 2:00.95 to remain undefeated in the 200y fly as a collegian. Bassi also placed second in the 400y IM (4:26.74), third in the 200y IM (2:08.54) and third in the 100y fly (58.25).

Senior Bethany Hall (Knoxville, Tenn.) also came up big for the Lady Vols with a win in the 200y free, clocking in at 1:52.84. Hall also scored for Tennessee by placing third in the 100y free (52.72) and fifth in the 50y free (24.68).

Lady Vol freshman Jacque Fessel (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded another win for the Orange and While with her victorious time of 2:01.93 in the 200y back. Additionally, Fessel placed second in the 100y back (57.02) and fifth in the 200y IM (2:11.63).

Also performing well for the Big Orange, freshman Graciela Breece-Rodriguez (Boulder, Colo.) scored in four individual events. Breece-Rodriguez placed second in the 100y fly (57.13), second in the 200y IM (2:08.05), third in the 100y back (58.86) and fourth in the 200y fly (2:05.41).

Other Lady Vol scorers included senior Nicole Brannock in the 200y breast (second) and 100y breast (third), freshman Randi Vogel in the 1650y free (third), 200y back (fourth) and 200y free (fourth), freshman Danielle Lundy in the 200y breast (fourth) and 100y breast (fifth), freshman Abbi Terveer in the 100y free (fourth) and 50y free (fourth), junior Raellen Arnold in the 1650y free (fourth), junior Taryn Ternent in the 100y free (fifth) and 100y back (fifth), freshman Kara Boland in the 200y free (fifth) and freshman Amy Roberts in the 400y IM (fifth).

The meet utilized a format in which the events were split into two sessions, one in the morning and one in the evening. The 10 a.m. session featured the 400y medley relay, 500y free, 400y IM, 100y free, one-meter springboard, 200y breast, 100y fly, 200y back and 200y free relay. During the 6 p.m. CT session, the 200y medley relay, 200y fly, 200y free, three-meter springboard, 100y breast, 50y free, 100y back, 1650y free, 200y IM and 400y free relay were contested.

"We were really stale during the morning swims and as a result we got behind heading into the evening session," UT Head Coach Dan Colella said. "We knew that we had a big challenge going into the evening and we did a much better job. But due to some outstanding performances by Northwestern, it just wasn't quite enough."

With the loss, the Lady Vols drop to 4-2 (3-0 SEC) on the season, while Northwestern improves to 6-3.

Tennessee returns to Knoxville for its final home meet of the season when it faces three-time national champion No. 3 Georgia at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Student Aquatic Center.

Northwestern 204.5, Tennessee 147.5
Evanston Ill., Jan. 18, 2003

Women 400 Yard Medley Relay
1, Northwestern University Women 'A'
