The 50-year-old will become the oldest swimming Olympian in history.<\/p>\n<p>The news was announced Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/guinea-bissau-names-american-siphiwe-baleka-to-its-olympic-swim-team-301317008.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a press release<\/a> by Claytown Productions, which produced <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/119291674\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an award-winning documentary<\/a> on Baleka. Baleka completed the naturalization process to become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.balanta.org\/news\/w042t3obccpcxqnefxwd6c9synpy4j\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a citizen of Guinea Bissau on June 10<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The National Swimming Federation has never had a team compete at the Olympic Games,&#8221; Federation President<strong> Duarte Iola<\/strong> said in the release. &#8220;Not only will Mr. Baleka be the first swimmer from Guinea Bissau at the Olympics, but he will also, at the age of fifty, be the oldest swimmer in Olympic history.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Baleka is a dual citizen of the United States. He\u2019s won 13 U.S. Masters Swimming national championships and four silver medals at the 2017 Masters Swimming World Championship. Baleka, under the name of <strong>Tony Blake,<\/strong> was born in Illinois and swam at Yale and was an All-Ivy selection. (His cousin, according to the release, is <strong>Jacob Blake,<\/strong> whose shooting by police in Kenosha, Wisc., last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/jacob-blake-shooting-kenosha.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prompted days of protests nationally<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>After his swimming career, Baleka\u2019s life took a variety of turns. He traveled through Africa and reconnected with his ancestry, from the Balanta ethnic group in Guinea Bissau, applying for citizenship as an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/stories.minorityrights.org\/afro-descendants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">afro-descendant<\/a>.\u201d He became a truck driver and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/morning-swim-show-siphiwe-balekas-three-tips-to-jolt-body-out-of-sedentary-lifestyle\/\">a fitness advocate<\/a>. He became the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/olympics\/2020\/12\/04\/siphiwe-baleka-olympics-daily-cover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subject of feature articles<\/a> and a documentary.
