She\u2019d be lying if she said otherwise. But when she got in the water Saturday night at Canadian Olympic Trials, it was all about her race and her goals.<\/p>\n<p>Masse hit them, with a long-awaited breaking of the 58-second mark to win the event in 57.70 seconds. She joins select company in the sub-58 category. Australian <strong>Kaylee McKeown<\/strong> re-set <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tears-and-tributes-flow-as-kaylee-mckeown-sets-a-new-wr-and-ariarne-titmus-rattles-katie-ledeckys-400-free-mark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the world record last week at 57.45 seconds<\/a>. American <strong>Regan Smith,<\/strong> who\u2019d held that mark at 57.57, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-olympic-trials-regan-smith-dials-up-sub-58-effort-in-100-backstroke-to-pace-dynamic-field\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">went 58.35 to win U.S. Olympic Trials<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s amazing seeing all the fast times around the world,\u201d Kylie Masse said. \u201cI\u2019ve tried to stay in the present moment about what\u2019s going on in our own country and I\u2019ve had to accept that this whole year and a half, you can only control competitions and training in our own country. With all the challenges in Canada and a twice-delayed Trials uncharacteristically late in the schedule, it\u2019s more a statement to herself to alleviate doubt. It certainly reaffirms that the two-time reigning World Champ in the event is a prime contender in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to be the fastest I can possibly be, and I\u2019ve been trying to break that 58 barrier,\u201d Kylie Masse said. \u201cI was really happy to do that here tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ever the Canadian leader, Masse shared a hug with <strong>Taylor Ruck,<\/strong> who punched her ticket to Tokyo with a time of 59.60. She\u2019d already had an Olympic A cut, but she fended off the advance by <strong>Ingrid Wilm,<\/strong> who earned an A cut in the morning at 59.88 and was third in finals at 1:00.19.<\/p>\n<p>Ruck had been pre-selected for the Games in the 100 free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so happy for Tay,\u201d Masse said. \u201cWe\u2019ve had the opportunity to train together here for the last year and a half when I joined the (Toronto High Performance) Centre here when pools reopened again. He gave <strong>Markus Thormeyer<\/strong> a run, though the veteran Olympian still got his hand to the wall first in 53.40.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s still sinking in,\u201d Pratt said. \u201cIt hasn\u2019t really hit me yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pratt, a Calgary native, joins the youth movement on display at Trials. He said he got a boost Saturday morning seeing fellow 18-year-old <strong>Joshua Liendo<\/strong> set a Canadian mark in the 100 butterfly, securing his Tokyo spot. He and the other younger members of the team showed that they\u2019re no longer the kids on the team, but rather leaders in waiting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBig time,\u201d Pratt said of Liendo&#8217;s swim. \u201cWatching my friends go fast just pumps me up even more. Josh is a brother to me, and seeing my friends and family doing the best they can gets me even more excited to get in the water and race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thormeyer already has his ticket to Tokyo punched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimming-canada-names-early-olympians-delays-trials-to-may\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in the 200 back via pre-selection<\/a>. He\u2019s trying to add at least two more events in the 100 back and 100 free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe race tonight, I think personally I didn\u2019t go as fast as I would\u2019ve wanted, but I guess I\u2019m saving that for Tokyo,\u201d Thormeyer said. \u201cI kind of just went out, this morning wasn\u2019t that great, so tonight, I wanted to make sure I\u2019m feeling the water right on the first 50 and I think I started to pay for it a bit at the end. I kind of faded a bit and I saw Cole coming up on me and I was like, &#8216;Oh my goodness this little kid, I don\u2019t want to lose.\u2019 So it was a good fight. That\u2019s not a problem on the women\u2019s side, given the 4:05.13 that <strong>Summer McIntosh<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/canadian-14-year-old-summer-mcintosh-blasts-405-in-400-freestyle-sense-of-ledecky-in-the-air\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">laid down last month<\/a>, which will earn a spot at the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>The win in Trials, which was done as timed finals, went to <strong>Alyson Ackman.<\/strong> The 28-year-old trimmed time off her seed, winning in 4:10.92, though that\u2019s shy of the A cut of 4:07.90. Ackman retired in 2016 but has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.germantownacademy.net\/athletics\/post-template\/~board\/athletic-news\/post\/swimming-alyson-ackman-places-at-pan-american-games\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reignited by coaching in the United States<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Second was <strong>Emily Overholt<\/strong> in 4:11.91.
