Dressel is coming off a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/us-olympic-trials-caeleb-dressel-swims-third-fastest-100-fly-ever-in-semifinals-49-76\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">semifinal performance of 49.76<\/a>, which puts him in striking distance of his world mark of 49.50. The event is first on the evening schedule.<\/p>\n<p>A world record has not been set Trials since 2008, the first year the meet was held in Omaha and when seven records went down. That surge of standards was fueled by the era of the super-suit, which radically altered the sport for the better part of two years. The last of the seven records set in 2008 was courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-olympic-trials-flash-margaret-hoelzer-sets-200-back-world-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Margaret Hoelzer<\/strong> in the 200 backstroke<\/a>, which was held on the seventh night of the meet.<\/p>\n<p>The 2004 Olympic Trials in Long Beach featured six world records while the 2000 Trials in Indianapolis, the last held at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/favorite-pools-john-lohn-on-the-history-and-aura-of-the-indiana-university-natatorium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">historic IU Natatorium<\/a>, witnessed zero world marks.<\/p>\n<p>Dressel has already clinched his spot on the American squad bound for the <a href=\"https:\/\/tokyo2020.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Olympic Games in Tokyo<\/a>, thanks to his triumph in the 100 freestyle earlier in the week.
