{"id":478314,"date":"2021-06-18T05:20:14","date_gmt":"2021-06-18T12:20:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=478314"},"modified":"2021-06-18T05:20:14","modified_gmt":"2021-06-18T12:20:14","slug":"israel-head-coach-luka-gabrilo-to-take-up-role-at-the-helm-of-team-iron-following-tokyo-olympics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/israel-head-coach-luka-gabrilo-to-take-up-role-at-the-helm-of-team-iron-following-tokyo-olympics\/","title":{"rendered":"Israel Head Coach Luka Gabrilo To Take Up Role At The Helm Of Team Iron Following Tokyo Olympics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Luka Gabrilo<\/strong> will leave his role as head coach of Israel following the <strong>Tokyo Olympics<\/strong> to lead <strong>Team Iron<\/strong> for Season 3 of the <strong>International Swimming League<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The 39-year-old has guided the Israeli national team since September 2017 which followed a coaching stint at the helm with Switzerland as well as <strong>Team Elite<\/strong> under <strong>David Marsh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, he oversaw Israel at the <strong>European Championships<\/strong> in Budapest where <strong>Anastasia Gorbenko<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/european-championships-day-6-finals-gorbenko-becomes-first-israeli-woman-to-win-european-title\/\">made history by becoming the first Israeli woman to win a continental title<\/a> with gold in the 200IM.<\/p>\n<p>Gabrilo comes from an aquatic family. His mother <strong>Durdica Bjedov<\/strong> was the only Yugoslav swimmer to win Olympic gold with victory in the 100 breaststroke at the 1968 Games in Mexico, where she also took silver over 200m.<\/p>\n<p>His father was also a water polo Olympian.<\/p>\n<p>In a release from the ISL, Gabrilo said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019m very excited to be joining Team Iron and look forward to applying my skills to help the team improve on last year\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have been fortunate to have had multiple chances to learn from some of the most appreciated coaches in the world, including my mother, <strong>Gennadi Touretski<\/strong>, and <strong>David Marsh<\/strong>, and this stands me in good stead for my work in the International Swimming League.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ahead of the ISL Draft, our club has some great swimmers potentially already in place, and I look forward to working with the whole team and to be part of such an exciting league.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Iron General Manager Dorina Szekeres<\/strong> added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are thrilled to welcome Luka to Team Iron.
