Photo Courtesy: Swimming WA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>His time of 1:47.54 would have seen him finish ninth and out of the final &#8211; until WA\u2019s <strong>Zac Incerti<\/strong> (1:46.64) was disqualified for <em>\u201cstarting before the starters signal\u201d<\/em> in the third of three seeded heats\u201d \u2013elevating Horton into eighth \u2013 but after an hour-long hearing Incerti and his coach <strong>Mick Palfrey<\/strong> breathed a sigh of relief when the appeal was upheld &#8211; putting him back in the final &#8211; his Olympic dream alive.<\/p>\n<p>A further twist came earlier when seventh fastest qualifier, Nunawading\u2019s <strong>Matthew Temple,<\/strong> withdrew from the final, confirming Horton in eighth to\u00a0 \u2013 and a secure spot in the final &#8211; before the Titmus<\/strong> (St Peters Western) will spearhead a red-hot field into the women\u2019s 400m freestyle final \u2013 with no less than five girls swimming under the qualifying time.<\/p>\n<p>Titmus, who admitted she had spent the last month managing a flare up with her injured shoulder, certainly showed no ill-effects, clocking 4:04.91 to win the opening heat from Chandler\u2019s <strong>Leah Neale<\/strong> (4:06.66) who later withdrew from the final to concentrate on the 200m and Griffith University\u2019s <strong>Lani Pallister<\/strong> (4.06.76), TSS Aquatic pair <strong>Moesha Johnson<\/strong> (4:06.94), <strong>Kiah Melverton <\/strong>(4:06.99) \u2013 all under the qualifying time of 4:07.10.<\/p>\n<p>Then followed UWA West Coast\u2019s Rio Olympian <strong>Tamsin Cook<\/strong> (4:07.18), TSS Aquatic\u2019s <strong>Maddy Gough<\/strong> (4:07.35), Nudgee\u2019s <strong>Mikayla Messer <\/strong>(4:08.30) and USC Spartans <strong>Dalhas Rogers <\/strong>(4:11.13).<\/p>\n<p>The men\u2019s 100m backstroke saw St Peters Western\u2019s <strong>Mitch Larkin<\/strong> inspired by team mate <strong>Elijah Winnington<\/strong> and fellow night one qualifiers, <strong>Jack McLoughlin, Brendon Smith, Se-Bom Lee<\/strong> and <strong>Emma McKeon,<\/strong> turn on the afterburners from the open dive to lead the qualifiers into the 100m backstroke final in 53.04.<\/p>\n<p>He will be joined by Rackley\u2019s former Bundaberg and Toowoomba 17-year-old National Age star <strong>Isaac Cooper <\/strong>who has snared the second fastest qualifying time with an impressive personal best of 53.79 ahead of Mingara\u2019s <strong>Bradley Woodward<\/strong> (54.47), Southport Olympic\u2019s <strong>Tristan Hollard<\/strong> (54.56), Griffith\u2019s <strong>Kai Van Kool<\/strong> (54.68), Loreto Normanhurst\u2019s <strong>William Yang<\/strong> (54.75), Chandler\u2019s <strong>Ty Hartwell <\/strong>(55.00) and Marion\u2019s <strong>Travis Southport Olympic\u2019s <strong>Chelsea Hodges <\/strong>(1:06.17), Bond&#8217;s <strong>Jenna Strauch<\/strong> (1:06.37) and Cruze\u2019s <strong>Jessica Hansen<\/strong> (1:06.37) all swimming under the 1:06.97 qualifying time and followed closely by St Peters Western\u2019s <strong>Abbey Harkin<\/strong> and Griffith\u2019s Rio Olympian <strong>Georgia Bohl<\/strong> both on 1:07.04, <strong>Tessa Wallace<\/strong> 1:07.50, <strong>Leiston Pickett<\/strong> (1:08.10) and <strong>Zoe Deakin<\/strong> (1:08.34)<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s 100m backstroke saw USC Spartans record-breaking backstroker <strong>Kaylee McKeown<\/strong> charge down the second lap to secure top spot in her first final of the meet in an impressive 58.57 \u2013 a full second ahead of Rio Olympian and 2015 World Championship silver medallist, Marion\u2019s <strong>Madi Wilson<\/strong> (59.58), followed by triple Olympian and three-time world champion Griffith\u2019s <strong>Emily Seebohm<\/strong> (59.83), rising St Peters Western teenager star <strong>Mollie O\u2019Callaghan<\/strong> (59.93), World Championship silver medallist <strong>Minna Atherton <\/strong>(1:00.06),
