{"id":473995,"date":"2021-05-23T09:31:11","date_gmt":"2021-05-23T16:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=473995"},"modified":"2021-05-23T18:18:39","modified_gmt":"2021-05-24T01:18:39","slug":"european-championships-day-finals-milak-goes-50-18-for-100-fly-gold-liukkonen-wins-50-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/european-championships-day-finals-milak-goes-50-18-for-100-fly-gold-liukkonen-wins-50-free\/","title":{"rendered":"European Championships, Day 7 Finals: Kristof Milak Goes 50.18 For 100 Fly Gold; Liukkonen Wins 50 Free"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Kristof Milak<\/strong> set a championship 100 fly record of 50.18 to go fourth all-time as he won his second title of the week in the final session of the <strong>European Championships<\/strong> in Budapest.<\/p>\n<p><b>Ari-Pekka Liukkonen <\/b>of Finland won the men&#8217;s 50 free ahead of defending champion Ben Proud with Kristian Gkolomeev third.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong> added the 50 fly title to her 50 free gold ahead of <strong>Melanie Henique<\/strong> and <strong>Emilie Beckmann.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Benedetta Pilato<\/strong>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/flash-italian-teen-benedetta-pilato-blasts-world-record-in-50-breaststroke\/\">set a world record of 29.30 in the semis<\/a>, won the 50 breaststroke with <strong>Ida Hulkko<\/strong> claiming Finland&#8217;s second medal in as many races in second and <strong>Yulia Efimova<\/strong> in third.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/budapest2020.microplustiming.com\/indexBudapest2021_web.php\">Link to results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/aquatics.eurovisionsports.tv\/home?id=J037sbwGmvZ09MGIIZxXtLeaN\">Link to live stream<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Milak Flying High<\/h3>\n<p>The Hungarian, who swam <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/european-championships-milak-thunders-to-200-fly-gold-in-151-10-2nd-fastest-in-history\/\">the second-fastest 200 fly in history of 1:51.10 en-route to gold<\/a> on\u00a0 Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/european-champs-day-6-semis-kristof-milak-chasing-sub-50-100-fly\/\">set a championship record of 50.62<\/a> in Saturday&#8217;s semis despite misjudging his finish.<\/p>\n<p>The world silver medallist was out in 23.58 and back in 26.60 to take first ahead of 17-year-old <strong>Josif Miladinov<\/strong> who set a Bulgarian record of 50.93 with Britain&#8217;s <strong>James Guy<\/strong> replicating his bronze medal from Glasgow 2018 in 50.99.<\/p>\n<p>It was a national record for Milak who lowered his previous mark of 50.47 from Hungarian Nationals in March and propelled him to fourth-fastest performer behind <strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong>, <strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong> and <strong>Milorad Cavic<\/strong> and leapfrogging 2016 Olympic champion <strong>Joe Schooling<\/strong> in the process.<\/p>\n<p>The European record of 49.95 has stood to Cavic since the <strong>2009 World Championships<\/strong> when the Serbian finished second behind Phelps whose world record of 49.82 lasted until July 2019 when Dressel went 49.50.<\/p>\n<p>Milak said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI never mention times beforehand, now I can tell I was hoping for something similar, between 50.2-50.4, I knew I was capable of that now so this Championship record is pretty fine for today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I managed to take on the guys in Europe, now there is one more whom I have to clash with in the summer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is what I\u2019m preparing for and I hope I will be in competition mood in Tokyo since today I didn\u2019t feel any excitement, which you supposed to have at a European Championships.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But no, my mood was like as if this were our nationals, if at all.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Maybe I\u2019ve got a bit tired by the end of the week, mostly mentally because of being locked down for so long.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Though it also prepares me what we can expect at the Olympics, so I\u2019m fine, ready to go all the way.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Miladinov, who turns 18 next month, was delighted, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis is my first European Championships over long-course so this medal just feels great.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;t\u2019s also an amazing feeling to swim with such an amazing group of guys like Kristof Milak.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m only 17 so it\u2019s just a really nice experience for me. I\u2019m really thankful to be here.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Guy, who returned to the pool to win gold with the British men&#8217;s medley relay, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a long and exhausting week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today I had a good swim. The race went pretty much as yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a great start off for Tokyo. I wanted to go between 21.4 and 21.2: it\u2019s my first title so I\u2019m happy.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Proud said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn the end, it was the little details which decided the race. I\u2019m not fresh and this is not my best time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019ve been training hard, maybe I\u2019m not ready as have to be to do more but it\u2019s great to be part of this family of champions. I<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;\u2019ve been racing against them for what seems a lifetime now so I\u2019m happy and satisfied.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Gkolomeev added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt was a nice race, I\u2019m happy with the medal and with my time. I<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;had expected it but then you never know because this is my first senior Europeans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But it\u2019s a gold, a first one, at my first European Championships so I\u2019m really happy now.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This gold medal was on my focus since yesterday and I\u2019m happy with my time too as it\u2019s better than the previous world record.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hulkko beamed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis is incredible. I never thought I could win a medal here. I don\u2019t really know how was the race but I guess it was really good\u2026\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Kromowidjojo Seals Gold Once More<\/h3>\n<p>Kromowidjojo won the 50 fly title in 25.30, going stroke-for-stroke with Henique with the Netherlands swimmer&#8217;s power, efficiency and length propelling her to victory 0.16 ahead of the Frenchwoman who touched in 25.46.<\/p>\n<p>Beckmann of Denmark was third in 25.59.<\/p>\n<p>Kromowidjojo heads to her fourth Games at the age of 30 with three Olympic titles and one silver medal to her name.<\/p>\n<p>Of the race, she said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s good. It\u2019s not my best time but I won the gold.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a tough race with Melanie and the other girls, but it\u2019s great, always nice to win a gold.
