{"id":473888,"date":"2021-05-22T11:05:29","date_gmt":"2021-05-22T18:05:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=473888"},"modified":"2021-05-22T16:26:21","modified_gmt":"2021-05-22T23:26:21","slug":"european-championships-day-6-finals-gorbenko-becomes-first-israeli-woman-to-win-european-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/european-championships-day-6-finals-gorbenko-becomes-first-israeli-woman-to-win-european-title\/","title":{"rendered":"European Championships, Day 6 Finals: Anastasia Gorbenko Becomes First Israeli Woman To Win European Title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>European Championships, Day 6 Finals: Anastasia Gorbenko Becomes First Israeli Woman To Win European Title<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Anastasia Gorbenko<\/strong> became the first Israeli woman to win a European title with 200IM gold in Budapest to end <strong>Katinka Hosszu&#8217;<\/strong>s winning run of five straight titles.<\/p>\n<p>The 17-year-old drew on to the shoulder of leader <strong>Abbie Wood<\/strong> on the final metres to win by 0.04 in 2:09.99 ahead of the Briton with Olympic champion Hosszu in third.<\/p>\n<p>It was her first medal in senior waters after taking silver at the 2019 European Junior Championships a year after becoming Youth Olympic champion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Femke Heemskerk<\/strong> won the 100 free to claim her first individual European title in 53.05 ahead of <strong>Marie Wattel<\/strong> and <strong>Anna Hopkin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mykhaylo Romanchuk<\/strong> added the 800 free title to his 1500 gold when he made a move on the penultimate length and overhauled leader <strong>Gregorio Paltrinieri<\/strong> to touch in 7:42.61 ahead of the European record holder who led home an Italian two-three with <strong>Gabriele Detti.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Paltrinieri concluded the competition with two silver medals in the pool to add to his three open water titles and although he will compete in both in Tokyo, the schedule is less intense and in a different order with the pool coming before the marathon swim.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Evgeny Rylov<\/strong> out-touched <strong>Luke Greenbank<\/strong> to defend his 200 backstroke title in 1:56.46 with <strong>Roman Mityukov<\/strong> in third.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong> won his fourth straight 50 breaststroke title with his victory in 26.21 followed by a wag of the finger ahead of <strong>Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong> and <strong>Nicolo Martinenghi.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was the seventh-fastest time in history for the Briton who now holds nine of the top 10 and who set the world record of 25.95 at the 2017 worlds held in the same Duna Arena pool.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Great Britain<\/strong> &#8211; This is my new personal best.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn\u2019t believe that I could do it or be as successful in the senior competition as a Youth Olympic champion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I still can\u2019t believe this and I&#8217;m trying to grasp the whole thing. This is my first individual gold medal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was working a lot for this event. I\u2019m the oldest in this field but I have a motto: never give up!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Her joy contrasted with Wattel who said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019m a little bit disappointed, I thought I could win this gold, but I feel tired as this week goes along.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To get two titles would have been the dream but it was just a bit too complicated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just need to be a little more patient with myself, it\u2019s already good to get this time multiple occasions this year, so now I just go back to training and work harder to get under the 53sec mark.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It was also a first individual medal for Hopkin and she said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019m so,so happy, this is my first individual international medal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The time is not far from my personal best which is 53.2.
