{"id":473785,"date":"2021-05-21T10:58:01","date_gmt":"2021-05-21T17:58:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=473785"},"modified":"2021-05-21T14:07:26","modified_gmt":"2021-05-21T21:07:26","slug":"flash-european-championships-womens-100-back-final-to-be-re-run-following-official-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/flash-european-championships-womens-100-back-final-to-be-re-run-following-official-protest\/","title":{"rendered":"FLASH European Championships: Women&#8217;s 100 Back Final To Be Re-Run Following Swedish Protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The women&#8217;s 100m backstroke final is to be re-run following an official protest by Sweden over the starter signal in lane eight at the <strong>European Championships<\/strong> in Budapest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kathleen Dawson <\/strong>had lowered her championship record to win in 58.18 but the result is now void and will take place once more on Friday evening after LEN upheld a protest over the starter system.<\/p>\n<p>Given the governing body did so, there was no counter protest by Britain.<\/p>\n<p>The Briton thought she had claimed her second gold of the meet after finishing just 0.06 off <strong>Gemma Spofforth<\/strong>&#8216;s 2009 European record of 58.12 to catapult her into the top-10 swims all-time as she became the sixth-fastest woman in history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kira Toussaint<\/strong>, the 50 back champion, was second\u00a0 with <strong>Maria Kameneva<\/strong> third.<\/p>\n<p>While Dawson celebrated, Toussaint questioned the starter system, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The start was very weird. I don\u2019t know if the starting system was stuck or something and I wasn\u2019t even sure if we were supposed to go.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The first hint something was amiss came when the medal ceremony didn&#8217;t go ahead as scheduled and a spokesperson confirmed to Swimming World that an official protest had been lodged and the final would be re-run, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Due to the partial malfunction of the starting system, the women&#8217;s 100m backstroke final shall be re-swum at 20.45 this evening.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All competitors are to swim the race again.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Swedish swimmer <strong>Louise Hansson<\/strong> had occupied lane eight and no reaction time is listed for her.<\/p>\n<p>She did though go out in 30.59 &#8211; the slowest of the field by 1.58secs &#8211; and came home in 1:02.29 for eighth place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fpAlj8i0ywg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/aquatics2020bp?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#aquatics2020bp<\/a> \ud83c\udded\ud83c\uddfa<br \/>SWIMMING \ud83c\udfca\u200d\u2640\ufe0f\ud83c\udfca\u200d\u2642\ufe0f<br \/>Day 12 &#8211; May 21th<\/p>\n<p>\u203c\ufe0f\u203c\ufe0f Due to the partial malfunction of the starting system, the women&#39;s 100m backstroke final shall be re-swum at 20.45 this evening.
