BRISBANE, Jan. 16. ASHLEY Callus had an awesome year in 2002, winning gold at the Short Course World Championships and establishing himself firmly as Australia's top freestyle sprinter.<\/p>\n

Competing at the Queensland Open & Age Championships at Chandler Pool in suburban Cleveland, the 23 year-old Redlands swimmer gave notice that he likes being king of the hill, thank you, and has no intention of vacating his perch.<\/p>\n

Leading off the Redlands 400m freestyle relay yesterday, he clocked a pr 48.92 for the 100 — his first time under 49 seconds — despite a virus infection that had made his participation doubtful. Today he kept up the sizzling pace with a swift 22.40- second 50m effort, winning by almost a full second. He swam even faster in prelims, 22.38.<\/p>\n

Sean Piper (23.27) was second and Casey Flouch (23.36) third. <\/p>\n

Callus missed his PR by one-hundredth of a second in the heat swim, a time that ranks him third behind Brett Hawke's Aussie record 22.18 and Michael Klim (22.31).<\/p>\n

In other highlights of Day 5 competition:<\/p>\n

Exciting newcomer Libby Lenton took out the 50 free in convincing fashion in a PR 25.67 to beat Pan Pac finalist Alice Mills (25.79) and Teagan Wilkie (PR 26.02). Lenton, 17, cut 0.26 seconds off her previous best to take her forth title of the meet. She has now captured the 50-100 double in both free and fly. Jodie Henry, the silver medalist in the 50-100 free at the Pan Pacs finished 4th in 26.11 well adrift of her Australian record of 25.29. <\/p>\n

Breaststroker Leisel Jones attempted her first 400IM and won the title in 4:52.00 and then was made to work hard when she backed up to also win the 200 breaststroke in 2:30.03 from Kelli Waite 2:30.61 and Sarah Kasoulis (2:31.88). Jones also took the 200IM last evening. <\/p>\n

Sydney visitor Luke Trickett snatched the men's 200 breaststroke in 2:18.52 from Brenton Rickard (2:18.83) in a close finish while Dylan Rackley won the men's 400IM in 4:31.97 from Shane Fielding 4:32.18.
