﻿{"id":472869,"date":"2021-05-14T23:47:15","date_gmt":"2021-05-15T06:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=472869"},"modified":"2021-05-15T05:15:12","modified_gmt":"2021-05-15T12:15:12","slug":"kaylee-mckeowns-surprise-text-message-from-regan-smith-just-hours-before-her-world-record-attempt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kaylee-mckeowns-surprise-text-message-from-regan-smith-just-hours-before-her-world-record-attempt\/","title":{"rendered":"Kaylee McKeown\u2019s Surprise Text Message From Regan Smith Just Hours Before Her World Record Attempt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australian swimming\u2019s latest rising star of the pool <strong>Kaylee McKeown<\/strong> has revealed she received a surprise text message on the eve of her world record attempt that saw her swim within a whisker of the 100m backstroke world mark in Sydney today.<\/p>\n<p>It was her loudest warning shot yet in the lead up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/tokyo2020.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tokyo Olympics<\/a> with the 19-year-old from Queensland\u2019s Sunshine Coast stopping the clock at 57.63 on the second day of finals at the Sydney Open &#8211; after her stinging attack on the record books brought the Sydney Open Meet to light.<\/p>\n<p>It was just six one hundredths (0.06) of a second outside the 2019 world record of 57.57, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/watch-regan-smith-in-100-back-usa-medley-relay-shatter-world-records-in-same-race-race-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">set by American <strong>Regan Smith<\/strong> at the 2019 World Championships<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And McKeown (USC Spartans) revealed she actually received a text message from her number one rival after also nudging her 200m world record yesterday, when McKeown clocked the fourth fastest time in history, with her 2:04.31.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nice to hear from competitors from all over the world, nice to know they\u2019re watching and they\u2019ve got your back as well,\u201d revealed McKeown after receiving the message from Smith, watching on Swimming NSW&#8217;s Swim TV live stream.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fj7LJrNICF8?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>\u201cRegan is an outstanding swimmer and she\u2019s a lovely person (too). It\u2019s a pretty outstanding world record to be chasing and to come up and edge a bit closer it\u2019s pretty exciting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a lot of girls out there still chasing those times&#8230;.I\u2019ll just see where it takes me&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McKeown, who with fellow Queenslander <strong>Emma McKeon,<\/strong> has been in red hot form at the final meet being swum at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre before next month\u2019s crucial Australian Olympic Trials in Adelaide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I touched the wall I looked over at my coach <strong>Chris Mooney<\/strong> and he wasn\u2019t looking at me&#8230;and I thought what?\u201d said McKeown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was (actually) shaking hands with all the other coaches and of course he came down and of course he\u2019s happy with me as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t expecting to come out and do that swim this morning, but I\u2019ve got no complaints about it. I\u2019m pretty happy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was so close but I have to have something to chase and Regan (Smith) is still the No 1 girl at the moment and then I\u2019ve got a lot of girls chasing me here like <strong>Emily Seebohm<\/strong>\u00a0 (second today in 59.06) and <strong>Minna Atherton<\/strong> (in Canberra on a training camp) and other girls coming out left right and centre and there is still a month to go (to our Trials).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho knows what can happen in that time&#8230;? Photo Courtesy: Delly Carr (SOPAC).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBy mixing up the events, you\u2019re mixing up the training styles the IM requires&#8230;it definitely lends itself to the way she enjoys training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegarding the 400 IM it would be probably difficult to look at that situation and justify it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a physiological point of view, it&#8217;s one of the toughest events in the book \u2013 you have to do 4x 100 metre sprints&#8230;and changing strokes and the recovery time on two of those events, which you pretty much got up to the pedal to the floor in the heat, otherwise you don&#8217;t get the second swim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhysiologically, it just takes too much out of you for an event that might you might be swimming 48 hours down the track.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo strategically, it&#8217;s been used throughout the season to help build capacity and racing, stimulating our fitness and training stimulus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just doesn&#8217;t work with the other events but especially at the Olympics if you are going to get it right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#8217;ve got to give yourself every chance to do so and focussing on controlling the controllables.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re not going to read our press.
