{"id":472604,"date":"2021-05-14T09:52:53","date_gmt":"2021-05-14T16:52:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=472604"},"modified":"2021-05-14T10:31:33","modified_gmt":"2021-05-14T17:31:33","slug":"atlanta-classic-day-1-prelims-caeleb-dressel-melanie-margalis-make-2-finals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/atlanta-classic-day-1-prelims-caeleb-dressel-melanie-margalis-make-2-finals\/","title":{"rendered":"Atlanta Classic Day 1 Prelims: Caeleb Dressel, Melanie Margalis Make 2 Finals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first day of the Mizuno 2021 Atlanta Classic opened with several big names in swimming competing in the prelims session.<\/p>\n<p>The men\u2019s races started first on Friday morning with a strong group leading the way in the 200 free.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/category\/usa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">More USA news<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atlanta Classic: Men\u2019s 200 Free<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Florida\u2019s <strong>Kieran Smith<\/strong> took the top seed in 1:46.30 and will face a tough final as Georgia\u2019s <strong>Jake Magahey<\/strong> took the second seed in 1:48.15, followed by Cal\u2019s A<strong>ndrew Seliskar<\/strong> (1:48.41) and <strong>Trenton Julian<\/strong> (1:48.68), Nova\u2019s <strong>Christian Quintero<\/strong> (1:48.78) and Florida\u2019s <strong>Trey Freeman<\/strong> (1:49.04).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> took the seventh seed in 1:49.35 and will be looming, along with eighth-seed <strong>Luca Urlando<\/strong> (1:49.68).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atlanta Classic: Men\u2019s 100 Breaststroke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another strong event packed with talent in the 100 breaststroke with a trio of Athens Bulldogs swimmers taking the top spots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nic Fink<\/strong> took the top seed in 59.84, the only swimmer to break a minute. <strong>Andrew Wilson<\/strong> was next in 1:00.68, followed by <strong>Kevin Cordes<\/strong> (1:00.84).<\/p>\n<p>Cal\u2019s<strong> Josh Prenot<\/strong> took the fourth seed (1:01.65), followed by Alabama\u2019s <strong>Derek Maas<\/strong> (1:02.16) and Cal\u2019s <strong>Reece Whitley<\/strong> (1:02.32).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atlanta Classic: Men\u2019s 100 Butterfly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After swimming the 200 free, <strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> took the top seed in the 100 butterfly, cruising to the wall in 51.92.<\/p>\n<p>Cal\u2019s <strong>Tom Shields<\/strong> took the second seed in 52.06, followed by <strong>Luis Martinez<\/strong> (51.14), <strong>Andrew Seliskar<\/strong> (52.26), <strong>Ryan<\/strong> <strong>Murphy<\/strong> (52.36), <strong>Luca Urlando<\/strong> (52.62) and <strong>Santiago Grassi<\/strong> (53.29).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atlanta Classic: Men\u2019s 400 IM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Athens Bulldogs\u2019s <strong>Chase Kalisz<\/strong> took the top seed in the 400 IM in 4:16.38, well ahead of the field.<\/p>\n<p>Dynamo\u2019s<strong> Jay Litherland<\/strong> took the second seed in 4:21.02, followed by Gator Swim Club\u2019s <strong>Ryan Lochte<\/strong> in 4:21.14.<\/p>\n<p>Grant Sanders took the fourth spot in 4:23.33, followed by Florida\u2019s <strong>Bobby Finke<\/strong> (4:23.86) and Cal\u2019s<strong> Sean Grieshop<\/strong> (4:23.92).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atlanta Classic: Women\u2019s 200 Free<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Melanie Margalis<\/strong> got the women\u2019s portion of the meet started by taking the top seed in the 200 free. She touched the wall in 1:58.75.<\/p>\n<p>Athens Bulldogs\u2019 <strong>Olivia Smoliga<\/strong> took the second seed in 1:59.23, the only other swimmer in the field under two minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Alabama\u2019s<strong> Cora Dupre<\/strong> took the third spot in2:00.75, followed by <strong>Talia Bates<\/strong> (2:00.95).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atlanta Classic: Women\u2019s 100 Breaststroke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Athens Bulldogs\u2019<strong> Zoie Hartman<\/strong> edged a couple of veterans to take the top spot in the 100 breast heading into finals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Micah Sumrall<\/strong> was second-fastest during prelims, touching the wall in 1:08.67.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melanie Margalis<\/strong>, fresh off of swimming the 200 free, took the third seed in 1:09.04, ahead of Arkansas&#8217;<strong> Vanessa Herrmann<\/strong> (1:10.46).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atlanta Classic: Women&#8217;s 100 Butterfly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong> put together a strong prelim race in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall in 58.70 to take the top seed heading into finals.<\/p>\n<p>Athens Bulldogs&#8217; <strong>Natalie Hinds<\/strong> took the second seed in 59.22, followed by Tennessee&#8217;s <strong>Madeline Banic<\/strong> (59.27), Alabama&#8217;s <strong>Rhyan White<\/strong> (59.59) and Athens Bulldogs&#8217; <strong>Dakota Luther<\/strong> (59.85).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atlanta Classic: Women&#8217;s 400 IM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Summer Smith<\/strong> held off the field for the top seed in the 400 IM, dropping more than two seconds from her seed time.
