From Tunes to Times That Will Define Cody Simpson\u2019s Chart Topper In This Pool Of Dreams<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s been 12 years since Cody Simpson<\/strong> swam at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre in the Australian Age Championships.<\/p>\n

And when he walked in to the \u201cPool Of Dreams\u201d today and through the Walkway Of Champions\u201d dedicated to the sport\u2019s legends like Dawn Fraser, Murray Rose, Ian Thorpe,<\/strong> Susie O\u2019Neill<\/strong> and so many more Australian swimming legends, Cody too was like a kid in a candy store.<\/p>\n

Back when he had bright eyes of being a swimmer and then a musician, Cody Simpson was one of the young kids most likely in the Australian Age swimming ranks.<\/p>\n

A kid who had always planned to swim until his 20s and then pursue a career in music later in life.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut that plan got flipped on its head and it\u2018s almost gone backwards (in reverse) now,\u201d said the internationally acclaimed pop star who has very much gone back to the future pursing his first love of swimming.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always planned on coming back to the sport. The fact that I\u2018m even competitive already is cool.<\/p>\n

\u201c I didn\u2019t think I\u2019d even be remotely competitive until late next year or even 2023 for that matter and the fact that I\u2019m already up there and racing is good.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is fun and I\u2019m ahead of where I thought I\u2019d be already and I\u2019m excited about that….<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a swimmer, you only have a certain sort of age that it\u2018s possible to be excellent at it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a musician, you can do it well into your 80s these days so I know I wanted to have a crack before and didn\u2019t want to spend the rest of my life thinking well \u201cWhat if…?”<\/p>\n

He has joined the team from Griffith University on the Gold Coast under renown Olympic coach Michael Bohl,<\/strong> and with the likes of Olympic stars Emily Seebohm<\/strong> and Emma McKeon<\/strong> and budding youngster Lani Pallister.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Walking around pool deck here in Sydney is certainly a far cry from the bright lights of LA and New York.<\/p>\n

He is just another \u201cnew kid\u201d on the blocks \u2013 working his way from the outside lanes like washed up baseballers coming back through the Little Leagues to make the Majors.<\/p>\n

Simpson qualified for the C final in today\u2019s 100m freestyle, improving his time from 51.93 to 51.62 (in a fun event for him) to finish sixth before preparing for tonight\u2019s 50m butterfly heats where he again improved his time from 24.68 to 24.47 to qualify for tomorrow morning\u2019s 50m butterfly A final in eighth place.<\/p>\n

Sunday will see Simpson line up in his main event the 100m butterfly \u2013 the Olympic event he will target for Paris.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a day-by-day thing and (I know) it\u2019s going to be a long process; we\u2019ve got a good thing going now in our training group……and we\u2019re having a lot of fun,\u201d said Simpson.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m improving rapidly with pbs in training and it\u2019s like that age thing happening again..it\u2019s a rapid progression…\u201d<\/p>\n

And he was quick to diffuse any serious talk of Tokyo.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2018s always been other people\u2019s expectations of me,\u201d said Simpson.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s funny to see the way people kind of talk it up, which they are going to do naturally, but Japan was never on the cards for me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought it would be said and done about 12 months ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that I could even go to the Trials is epic but Paris (2024) has always been kind of the shining jewel for me in terms of where my ambitions and goals lie.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut, I\u2018ve been surprising myself time and time again since I started back. So you never know.\u201d<\/p>\n

And of the unusual combo of music and swimming I don\u2018t want to be pigeonholed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2018s important, I guess, in life to compartmentalise and have periods where you can sort of give the effort to different things and different goals and ambitions that you may have,\u201d said Simpson.<\/p>\n

Coach Bohl admitted his new addition had just come into the group as one of the kids (as he refers to all his pupils) and given no special favours.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he\u2019s enjoying the anonymity. He\u2019s (actually) really enjoying that,\u201d said Bohl.<\/p>\n

\u201cCody is just one of the guys in there and he\u2019s working really hard. He\u2019s trying to get himself better. He\u2019s taking it very seriously.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd is under no illusions he\u2019s going to do anything ever, but he\u2019s just trying to be the best he can be and we\u2019ll just see where that takes him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2018s got ability, he\u2019s got talent. He\u2019s a good competitor but there\u2019s no expectations at all for him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2018s just qualified for the National Open Championships so he\u2019s certainly not front and centre in terms of making teams in the immediate term but we\u2019ll see what happens over the next three years because he\u2019s got a lot of improvement to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

One thing is certain Cody Simpson is up for the ride and so is his squad and one of Australia\u2019s finest Olympic coaches.<\/p>\n

Swimming has certainly adopted the return of a prodigal son…and who knows where it\u2019s going to land….?<\/p>\n
