{"id":471833,"date":"2021-05-08T07:57:07","date_gmt":"2021-05-08T14:57:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=471833"},"modified":"2021-05-08T08:12:15","modified_gmt":"2021-05-08T15:12:15","slug":"chad-le-clos-takes-200-free-at-south-african-grand-prix-in-stellenbosch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chad-le-clos-takes-200-free-at-south-african-grand-prix-in-stellenbosch\/","title":{"rendered":"Chad Le Clos Takes 200 Free at South African Grand Prix in Stellenbosch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Chad Le Clos Takes 200 Free at South African Grand Prix in Stellenbosch<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 2021 CANA Grand Prix Swimming Meet wrapped up today at the Stellenbosch University Swimming Pool with two gold medals each for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/matthew-sates-picks-up-olympic-qualification-in-200-im-at-south-africa-grand-prix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Matthew Sates<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Rebecca Meder<\/strong>, <strong>Lara van Niekerk<\/strong> and <strong>Hannah Robertson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the fast-pace 50m freestyle, Sates was just 0.87secs off the 22.01 <a href=\"http:\/\/swimsa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Olympic Qualification<\/a> requirement when he bagged the gold medal in 22.88 ahead of <strong>Ryan Coetzee<\/strong> in 23.26 and Senegal\u2019s <strong>Elhadji Niane<\/strong> in 23.39, while in the 100m butterfly, the 17 year old sped past <strong>Chad le Clos<\/strong> to claim the top spot in 52.30 to the Olympian\u2019s 53.37.<\/p>\n<p>The bronze in the event was claimed by <strong>Ethan du Preez<\/strong> in 54.32, who also went on to win the 800m freestyle in 8:54.70, while Le Clos was victorious in the 200m freestyle, clocking 1:48.83 to <strong>Matthew Bosch\u2019s<\/strong> 1:54.05 and <strong>Kobe Ndebele\u2019s<\/strong> 1:56.53.<\/p>\n<p>Meder added two more gold medals to her tally in the 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley, touching the wall in 1:05.05 and 2:17.41, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The silver and bronze in the medley race were claimed by <strong>Georgia Nel<\/strong> in 2:26.73 and <strong>Savannah Voigt<\/strong> in 2:32.98, while the rest of the backstroke medal podium comprised of <strong>Bernelee Doster<\/strong> in 1:06.63 and <strong>Holly Cleworth<\/strong> in 1:07.14.<\/p>\n<p>Voigt also won the bronze in the 50m breaststroke in 36.32 behind <strong>Lara van Niekerk<\/strong> in 31.06, Zambia\u2019s <strong>Tilka Paljk<\/strong> in 33.44 and the silver in the 200m breaststroke in 2:54.03 to <strong>Emma Kuhn\u2019<\/strong>s golden 2:50.52.<\/p>\n<p>Van Niekerk scooped her second gold in the 50m butterfly in 28.69, followed by <strong>Michaela de Villiers<\/strong> in 29.24 and <strong>Courtney van Biljon<\/strong> in 29.41, while in the 200m butterfly, <strong>Dune Coetzee<\/strong> was first in 2:16.06 to <strong>Jhoane Voges\u2019<\/strong> 2:43.21.<\/p>\n<p>In the 100 and 400m freestyle, it was <strong>Hannah Robertson<\/strong> that walked away with the gold in 58.70 and 4:31.44, while the silver and bronze in the 100m event went to Senegal\u2019s <strong>Jeanne Boutbien<\/strong> in 59.38 and <strong>Rachel Groepes<\/strong> in 1:00.91, and in the 400m race, Tunisia\u2019s <strong>Jamila Boulakbech<\/strong> and Paralympian <strong>Alani Ferreira<\/strong> finished second and third in 4:38.82 and 5:01.44, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Houlie<\/strong> was over 3.35secs ahead of the competition in the 100m breaststroke, winning the event in 1:02.32, followed by <strong>Benji Sack<\/strong> in 1:05.67 and Malawi\u2019s <strong>Filipe Gomes<\/strong> in 1:09.07, while in the 50m backstroke, <strong>Wikus Potgieter<\/strong> took home the gold medal in 28.73 ahead of <strong>Adriaan Louw<\/strong> in 29.47 and Botswana\u2019s Andile Bekker in 29.81.<\/p>\n<p>Potgieter also claimed the bronze in the 200m backstroke in 2:21.22, behind <strong>Martin Binedell<\/strong> in 2:03.18 and <strong>Nic Flanegan<\/strong> in 2:16.81.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u2014 The above press release was posted by Swimming World in conjunction with Swimming South Africa<\/i><i>.
