The U.S. national teamer has proven himself a strong head coach in six seasons at the University of Houston, leading the Cougars\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/at-aac-championships-houston-women-win-fifth-straight-smu-men-get-first\/\">to five consecutive American Athletic Conference women\u2019s titles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_470735\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-470735\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cMy family and I are honored and humbled for the opportunity to serve as the head coach at Auburn University,\u201d Wochomurka said in a university statement. \u201cI am very thankful to Mr. Allen Greene, President Gogue, the Board of Trustees, and our proud alumni for the opportunity to lead our Auburn men and women in the pool. His final award\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2021-american-athletic-conference-championship-results\/ncaa-college\/2021\/February\/25?rtn=%2Fresults%2Fncaa-college\">at this year\u2019s championships<\/a>\u00a0included producing the co-AAC swimmers of the year (<strong>Mykenzie Leehy<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Ioanna Sacha<\/strong>) and the freshman of the year (<strong>Laura Garcia-Marin<\/strong>). His son,\u00a0<strong>Marc<\/strong>, wrote in a public Facebook group:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hello \u201cNort\u2019s\u201d extended family. I am sad to notify you that Dad passed away at 8 AM this morning. The good news is that he passed peacefully. We are in the process of grieving and planning. I will continue to update this group. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers truly inspiring!! Go Bears (and Go Owls\u00a0from those of you from the Foothill days)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_470630\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-470630\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Thornton coached at Cal Berkeley from 1974 to his official retirement in 2007 where he won two national titles in back to back years in 1979 and 1980. He also served as a coach for the United States\u2019 1992 Olympic team which was littered with current and former Cal swimmers\u00a0<strong>Matt Biondi<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Scott Jaffe<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Ron Karnaugh<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Sean Killion<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Roque Santos\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Joel Thomas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Thornton also coached many individual Olympic medalists in his career including backstroker\u00a0<strong>Peter Rocca<\/strong>\u00a0(USA); freestylers:\u00a0<strong>Pelle Holmertz<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Bengt Baron<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Par Arvidsson<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Thomas Lejdstrom<\/strong>, (Sweden); and\u00a0<strong>Graham Smith<\/strong>\u00a0of Canada. Later in his Cal career after his Hall of Fame induction, he coached\u00a0<strong>Anthony Ervin\u00a0<\/strong>to shared gold in the 50 freestyle in 2000, and nearly repeated that feat with Croatia\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Duje Draganja\u00a0<\/strong>grabbing silver in 2004.<\/p>\n<h3>#4: Andre Calvelo de Souza Provisionally Suspended at Brazil Trials After Positive Doping Test<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/brazilian-federation-cbda-announces-positive-doping-test-of-olympic-qualifier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>By Matthew de George<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Brazilian Confederation of Aquatic Sports (CBDA) Friday announced an adverse analytical finding in a swimmer who qualified for the Olympics, leading to a provisional suspension of their results at the ongoing Brazilian Olympic Trials. While CBDA didn\u2019t release the name of the swimmer, reports out of Brazil and evidence from Trials Saturday indicate that the swimmer is 100 freestyle champion\u00a0<strong>Andre Calvelo de Souza<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The positive came in an out-of-competition test, on March 18, 2021. The CBDA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/novo.cbda.org.br\/noticia\/leitura\/19698\/comunicado-resultado-analitico-adverso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said in its statement that it was notified<\/a>\u00a0by the Brazilian Doping Control Authority on Friday. The name of the swimmer was not released, and the CBDA emphasized that the process is confidential and requires testing of a B sample. But\u00a0<em>Globo<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globoesporte.globo.com\/natacao\/noticia\/nadador-brasileiro-com-vaga-nas-olimpiadas-de-toquio-e-pego-no-doping.ghtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported Saturday that the swimmer<\/a>\u00a0is de Souza, the the men\u2019s 100 free winner. (As of Saturday morning,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cbda.org.br\/natacao\/resultadoPorProva\/prova\/1007871\/fase\/f\">the results on the CBDA\u2019s site<\/a>\u00a0were updated with de Souza\u2019s name still at the top but with\u00a0<strong>Pedro Spajari<\/strong>\u00a0also having a first place next to his name and the other six swimmers all elevated a spot.)<\/p>\n<p>The CBDA statement includes a note that the ninth-place swimmer in the suspended athlete\u2019s event will be offered a time trial to try to qualify. Should de Souza\u2019s suspension hold, Brazil would have to fill his spot on the 400 free relay. That would come down to\u00a0<strong>Felipe Souza<\/strong>, who finished fifth in 48.87, and ninth-place\u00a0<strong>Gabriel Santos<\/strong>, who went 49.22 in prelims. The ISHOF Lifetime Achievement Award is an award not given every year, but only when someone is deemed worthy.<\/p>\n<p>The award has only been given out four other times in ISHOF\u2019s history. The ISHOF Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes the lifetime dedication and achievements in the swimming\/aquatics community. ISHOF felt that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/commentary-eddie-reese-era-ended-on-a-high-note-his-legacy-measures-far-beyond-title-banners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coach Reese<\/a>\u00a0was the perfect selection for our award in 2021, particularly after his recent announcement of his retirement last month, the timing is perfect.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_470190\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-470190\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<\/div>\n<p>The ISHOF Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Coach Reese on Friday, October 8, 2021, during the occasion of the 2021 Honoree Induction and Awards Ceremony Weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, home of ISHOF.
