{"id":470639,"date":"2021-04-22T11:21:43","date_gmt":"2021-04-22T18:21:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=470639"},"modified":"2021-04-22T11:21:43","modified_gmt":"2021-04-22T18:21:43","slug":"after-winning-mpsf-mens-title-byu-lets-coach-john-brooks-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/after-winning-mpsf-mens-title-byu-lets-coach-john-brooks-go\/","title":{"rendered":"After Winning MPSF Men\u2019s Title, BYU Lets Coach John Brooks Go"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BYU <a href=\"https:\/\/byucougars.com\/story\/m-swimming-diving\/1296101\/brooks-contract-not-renewed-skabelund-named-interim-byu-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced Wednesday<\/a> that head swimming and diving coach John Brooks&#8217; contract would not be renewed, despite Brooks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/high-five-byu-men-win-fifth-hawaii-women-win-fifth-straight-mpsf-championships\/\">leading the team to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title in 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/john-brooks-hired-as-next-byu-head-coach\/\">hired in 2012<\/a>. He\u2019s won four MPSF titles, this year\u2019s triumph being the first since 2016. This title was a dominant performance, the Cougars accumulating 135 more points than runner-up Hawaii. BYU won 10 of 20 events, including four of five relays, and set a pair of conference records.<\/p>\n<p>BYU\u2019s women\u2019s team was the runner-up to Hawaii\u2019s fifth straight championship.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks was <a href=\"https:\/\/byucougars.com\/story\/m-swimming-diving-w-swimming-diving\/1296011\/mcbratney-and-dominguez-named-mpsf-swimmer-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">named coach of the year in the MPSF<\/a> and mentored both the league\u2019s women\u2019s swimmer of the year (Katie McBratney) and the men\u2019s swimmer of the year, Josue Dominguez. Dominguez is slated to represent the Dominican Republic at Olympics this summer. Brooks was the MPSF coach of the year in 2015 and 2016 as well.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant coach <strong>Shari Skabelund<\/strong> will serve as, \u201cas interim head coach for the 2021-22 season\u201d with no mention of whether a search for a permanent successor is ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>Skabelund is a BYU grad, the first woman to complete a four-year career at the school. She qualified for the AIAW national meet in 1978 and 1979. She began working as a part-time assistant in 1987 and was been with the program ever since, specializing in working with sprinters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BYU announced
