{"id":469922,"date":"2021-04-17T10:48:33","date_gmt":"2021-04-17T17:48:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=469922"},"modified":"2021-04-17T11:24:38","modified_gmt":"2021-04-17T18:24:38","slug":"florian-wellbrock-swims-344-400-free-on-night-two-of-germanys-olympic-qualifier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/florian-wellbrock-swims-344-400-free-on-night-two-of-germanys-olympic-qualifier\/","title":{"rendered":"Florian Wellbrock Swims 3:44 400 Free on Night Two of Germany&#8217;s Olympic Qualifier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Florian Wellbrock Swims 3:44 400 Free on Night Two of Germany&#8217;s Olympic Qualifier<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The 2021 German Olympic qualifying meet #2 continued Saturday from Berlin, the host of the 2002 European champs and numerous World Cup meets.<\/p>\n<p>The best swim of the day came from world champion\u00a0<strong>Florian Wellbrock\u00a0<\/strong>in the 400 freestyle, who beat the stacked field with a 3:44.36, ahead of\u00a0<strong>Lukas Martens\u00a0<\/strong>(3:44.86) and\u00a0<strong>Henning Muhleittner\u00a0<\/strong>(3:45.36), who were both under Germany&#8217;s Olympic standard of 3:46.40.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tbnSCfGoy9E\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Wellbrock may end up dropping the 400 from his program in Tokyo as he will likely do the 800 and 1500 as well as the 10K, the latter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimming-world-presents-florian-wellbrock-as-mens-open-water-swimmer-of-the-year-on-the-cover-of-november-2019-issue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two being the events he is the reigning world champion in.<\/a> All three men are currently ranked in the top ten in the world for 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The women&#8217;s race produced a similarly thrilling race with 200 champ\u00a0<strong>Isabel Gose\u00a0<\/strong>coming out on top with a 4:05.19 over 1500 Worlds silver medalist <strong>Sarah Kohler\u00a0<\/strong>(4:05.99) and\u00a0<strong>Leonie Kullmann\u00a0<\/strong>(4:06.25). Kohler may likely drop the 400 from her program as well, just like her fiancee Wellbrock as she will be a medal contender in both the 800 and 1500 come Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>Germany qualified a women&#8217;s and men&#8217;s 4&#215;100 free relay for Tokyo as\u00a0<strong>Annika Bruhn\u00a0<\/strong>led the 100 free field on the women&#8217;s side at 53.96 ahead of\u00a0<strong>Lisa Hopink\u00a0<\/strong>(54.65) and\u00a0<strong>Marie Pietruschka\u00a0<\/strong>(54.73) while\u00a0<strong>Hannah Kuchler\u00a0<\/strong>was fourth at 54.88.<\/p>\n<p>The men&#8217;s 100 free field was led by\u00a0<strong>Damian Wierling<\/strong>, who qualified individually with a win at 48.48, ahead of\u00a0<strong>Marius Kusch\u00a0<\/strong>(48.91) and\u00a0<strong>Christoph Fildebrandt\u00a0<\/strong>(49.05) with\u00a0<strong>Josha Salchow\u00a0<\/strong>(49.09) in fourth.<\/p>\n<p>Florida&#8217;s\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CNxdCjigBn-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Friese<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>was a 49.05 last week in Mission Viejo, which solidified his spot on Germany&#8217;s Olympic team for the 4&#215;100 free relay.<\/p>\n<p>2017 Worlds silver medalist\u00a0<strong>Franziska Hentke\u00a0<\/strong>was the lone swimmer in the 200 butterfly final as she swam a 2:09.68. Hentke is already off to her second Olympics this summer as she has already reached the qualifying standard in this event.\u00a0<strong>Ramon Klenz\u00a0<\/strong>was the lone representative in the men&#8217;s 200 fly as he won with a 1:56.64, which was off the desired standard of 1:56.30.<\/p>\n<p>The men&#8217;s 400 IM saw\u00a0<strong>Jacob Heidtmann\u00a0<\/strong>get under the Olympic standard with a 4:14.00, although he is already on the team for Tokyo.\u00a0<strong>Kim Herkle\u00a0<\/strong>won the women&#8217;s race at 4:41.76, although missed the desired time by three
