Consider Larkin\u2019s goal met, as he cruised to a first-place finish of 1:56.74 on Saturday morning. The win handed Larkin his third national title in the event, and he was just a second off his Australian and Commonwealth record of 1:55.72.<\/p>\n<p>During prelims the previous night, Larkin eased through qualifying of the 200 medley while exerting significant energy in the 200 backstroke, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/after-impressive-154-38-prelim-of-200-bacstroke-at-aussie-champs-decision-looms-for-mitch-larkin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">en route to a time of 1:54.38<\/a>. The strategy was to produce an elite marker in each event. In the 200 medley, Larkin touched the wall well ahead of the field, as second place went to Louis Townsend in 2:02.98.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next two months, Larkin will weigh his options for the Australian Olympic Trials. With the 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley on the same night, he has indicated he will not contest both events. So, which event does he choose in the chase for an <a href=\"https:\/\/tokyo2020.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Olympic<\/a> medal.<\/p>\n<p>In other men\u2019s action, the title in the 400 freestyle went to <strong>Elijah Winnington<\/strong> in 3:45.69, with second place going to <strong>Thomas Neill<\/strong> in 3:46.35. Meanwhile, <strong>Tristan Holland<\/strong> won the 200 backstroke in Larkin\u2019s absence, his winning time a 1:56.40.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mitch
