THE weather may have been cold, dreary and drizly but Stanford coach Skip Kenney's Cardinal men's swimming and diving team was hotter than a summer day in Rio here this afternoon.

Stanford, bidding for its initial NCAA Division 1 Championship of the new century and also its first since the 1998 season, opened 2003 with a resoundingly impressive 148.5-89.5 victory over top-ranked Michigan at the Cardinal Avery Aquatic Center. Stanford improves its dual-meet record to 2-0 while Michgian falls to 4-1.

The Wolverines had been ranked No.1 since their stunning upset of previously top-ranked and treble-defending NCAA champ Texas the Friday before Thanksgiving in Austin. Michigan subsequently drowned previously undefeated Florida in Ann Arboir to solidfy its claim on the top spot.

Stanford defeated the Wolverines at Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor a year ago and holds an overall 8-4 series advantage over their Big 10 foe.

Led by its "usual suspects," i.e., defending NCAA 200 back-200 IM champ Marcus Rogan (who was also European Championships' silver medalist in the 200 back for his native Austria last summer in Berlin); defending Pac-10 200 IM champ Dan Trupin, defending Pac-10 200 breast champ Michael Bruce, former Pac-10 100 fly champ Bobby O'Bryan — not to mention world 50 back champ Randall Bal, Peter Marshall and Dan Westcott — Stanford swept five events, went one-two in a pair of others and, in general, showed no mercy to Coach Jon Urbancek's Wolverines.

Michigan's Peter Vanderkaay scored the meet's only double, splashing home first in the 500 (4:23.710 and 1000 (9:01.20) frees.

Marshall got the proceedings off to a sizzling start, leading off the Cardinal 400 medley relay with a nation-leading 46.70 100 back split. His time eclipsed the 46.83 Cal's Malayasian Olympian, Alex Lim, swam at the Longhorn Invitational the first weekend of last month that ranked him No. 1 nationally.

Stanford won in 3:14.15 with its "B" team (3:16.23) and its "C" team (3:23.27) taking the next two places. Michigan was hurt when its leading team was disquqalified. Westcott, a former Pac-10 100 fly champ, led off the "B" team in a not-too-shabby 47.54 while Canadian rookie Tobias Oriwol led off the "C" team in 50+.

After Vanderkaay won the 1000 with Cardinal sophomore Matt Sorlein (9:08.46) and teammate Michael McLean 9:09.67) taking second and third, the Cardinal scored thef irst of its four sweeps by going a one, a two, and a three in the 200 free. Rogan won (1:37.28) with Ketchum next (1:37.39) and John Waters (1:37.48) third.

Next up was the 50 free where Bal showed his heels to the field in 20.06. Marshall, showing he's as adept on his stomach as he is on his back, where he's the Cardinal and Pac-10 record-holder in the 100, was second (20.26) with O'Bryan (20.63) third. The latter had something of a "sophomore jinx" last season but if he returns to the fine form he showed as a freshman the Cardinal's chacnes of dethroning Texas will be enhanced immeasureably.

Trupin went a seasonal-pr 1:46.51 to win the 200 IM with Oriwol and Bruce taking the next two places. Trupin's time is just off the national No. 1 (1:46.30) by Auburn's George Bovell from the dual-meet with Texas last evening in Auburn — a meet the Longhorns lost decisively.

Stanford's Adam Peterson then won the 1-meter diving with 219.20 points; sophomore Jayme Cramer scored a win in the 200 fly (1:46.16) with Westcott (1:48.26) and Matt McDonald second and third, Bobby O the 100 free (44.77) with Bal in "hot pursuit" at 44.91 and Trupin third (45.29). Marshall took gold in the 200 back (1:44.44) as Rogan took second (1:45.53) and Michigan's fast-improving Chris DeJong the bronze (1:47.11).

Vanderkaay struck for his second gold with a 4:23.73 win in the 500, with Cards Sorlien and McLean again second and thrdl. Card Gavn Olmstead won the 3-meter board (324.00) with Peterson (311.25) next; and then the Wolverines registered their only sweep of the meet, a 1`-2-3 finish in the 200 breast. Jeff Hopwood (2:01.40) was No. 1, followed by Canadian Olympian Chuck Sayao and Heath Novak.

Michigan also won the closing 400 free relay with freshman Davis Tarwater leading off in 45.53. Tarwater was a 48 flat 100 flyer as a senior in high school in Tennessee last season and will likely make an impact at this season's Big 10s, if not NCAAs too.

Stanford returns to action tomorrow, Jan. 11, at 1PM PST in a double-dual meet with Pacific and Cal State Bakersfield at Avery. Michigan travels across the Golden Gate Bridge to face undfeated Cal at the latter's Spieker Aqauatics Complex in Berkeley.

That meet will mark the 2003 debut of Cal senior Anthony Ervin, triple-defending NCAA 100 free champ, who's the race's American/national-collegiate record-holder. Ervin also holds the American/NCAA record in the 50 free (19.05) although he's actually tied with former UCLA star Tom Jager for the AR here. Jager did his time a decade ago while swimming for Santa Clara after completing his career in Westwood.

— Bill Bell

MEN'S NCAA DIVISION 1 DUAL MEE

MICHIGAN VS.
