AUSSIE Travis Nederpelt raced to his third and fourth golds of the competition this evening and American Matt Grevers made it two-for-two in second-day action at the Sydney Olympic Youth Festival.

Nederpelt, who won golds in the 800 free and 200 fly opening night, scored his third individual with an impressive 4:21.34 400 IM triumph — not quite six seconds faster than American runner-up Keenan Newman's 4:27.03. USA's Patrick Medurs (4:28.47) won the bronze.

Nederpelt got his fourth gold in the night's concluding race, the 800 free relay, anchoring the Australia quarter that triumphed in 7:31.72. The USA won the silver medal with its 7:33.56.

Patriot Aquatics' Grevers, who won Uncle Sam's only gold opening night with a victory in the 100 meter backstroke, made it a pair tonight with 51.22-51.43 100 free win over Canadian Colin Russell. Third was USA's Kyle Bubolz, who'll be among the favorites in the 100 fly, with a 51.51.

The Aussie "juggernaut" was slowed somewhat on Day 2 as the host nation won only two races, the women's 100 free and 400 IM, giving them six — most of any country.

In the 100 free, 16-year-old Marieke Guehner came home No. 1 (57.07), followed by teammate Medlissa Mitchell (57.16). The United States' Kassandra Kugler's 57.50 was good for fifth, highest American finisher. Kugler scored a medal placing last night with her third in the 200 free.

The other Aussie winner was medleyist Charnelle Crossington, who won the 400 in 4:51.21 to Japan's Yumi Kida's 4:51.38. Kida scored her nation's initial victory last evening with a solid 16:33.94 1500 free triumph.

A pair of Americans — Ellen Breeder and Molly Houlton — clocked 4:51.86 to tie for fifth.

In the women's 100 breast,Japan recorded its first 1-2 sweep as Sayako Nakamura won in 1:10.89 and Megumi Taneada took second (1:11.19). Americans Courtney Kitkus (1:14.79) and Hailey DeGolia (1:15.29) were fifth and sixth, respectively.

Canada got on the board when 18-year-old Matt Huang and teammate Scott Dickens splashed to a 1-2 finish in the 100 breast, the winner touching in a world-class 1:03.71. Dickens wasn't far behind at 1:03.93 with the USA's Keenan Newman winning the bronze (1:04.28).

The Maple Leaf nation also produced something of an upset in the women's 800 free relay, taking the gold in 8:16.59 to Australia's runner-up 8:17.32. Team USA was third (8:26.40).

Australia, which has dominated the men's 800 free relay on the international scene for a number of years now (of course, it doesn't hurt to have the world record-holder in the 200 free for an anchor!), won the men's relay in 7:31.72.

U.S. women's coach Ray Mitchell of Terrapins commented on the team's performance despite a late arrival. The team came in with only two days to adjust to the time change.

“We stepped up to race and hung in there really well. We have a very different approach than other teams here, so it’s encouraging to see them in the races."

“There are several things to improve upon and a lot of challenges in the next two days," noted head men's coach Rick Curl of Curl-Burke. "I was very impressed by the times put up. Several swimmers had best times or were very close tonight.
