Baumann said he was thrilled to be appointed as CEO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Olympic Gold To Shaping The Future Of Sport<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alex Baumann was one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/league-of-olympic-swim-legends-michael-phelps-tops-400im-podium-with-darnyi-dolan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canada\u2019s greatest swimmers<\/a>, winning gold medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in both the 200m and 400m individual medley races in world record times. Photo Courtesy: Delly Carr (Swimming Australia).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He was twice named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/issues\/1984\/swimming-world-magazine-december-1984-issue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Male Swimmer of the Year<\/a>, in 1981 and 1984, and is a member of the Canadian Sports and Canadian Amateur Sports Hall of Fame. Canada has also honoured him with the Order of Ontario, an Honorary Doctorate (PhD) in Physical Education from Laurentian University, and by making him an Officer of the Order of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Alex was born in Prague and moved to Canada with his family as a child. He spent 15 years living in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>During which time he was the Executive Director for the Queensland Academy of Sport and Chief Executive Officer of Queensland Swimming.<\/p>\n<p>Alex returned to Canada as the Executive Director of the Road to Excellence programme and later became the Chief Executive Officer of Own the Podium to work with their high performance athletes, coaches and support staff.<\/p>\n<p>Alex was appointed as the Chief Executive of High Performance Sport New Zealand in February, 2012, where he was instrumental in rolling out the HPSNZ Strategic plan to 2020.<\/p>\n<p>From 2012 until the end of 2017 he was involved in the London Olympics with New Zealand athletes and teams winning 13 medals. Paralympics similarly had great success with New Zealand winning a total of 17 medals .<\/p>\n<p>At the Sochi Winter Olympic Games New Zealand ended with four athletes in the top eight.<\/p>\n<p>At the Commonwealth Games New Zealand won 45 medals with an impressive 14 golds.<\/p>\n<p>The Rio Olympics produced the best ever New Zealand Olympic team performance, 18 medals in 9 different sports.<\/p>\n<p>Alex resigned as CEO HPSNZ on 1 September 2017 to the Gold Coast to be closer to his family and extended family.<\/p>\n<p>He accepted the position of Chief Strategist for Swimming Australia in February 2018.
