Dads on Deck: Brent and Amy Bilquist<\/span><\/h1>\n

Swimming World presents a quarterly series that showcases moms and dads of swimmers from around the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Amy Bilquist was a talented swimmer from a young age. Growing up in Scottsdale, Ariz., her father, Brent, enjoyed watching his daughter\u2019s success in the pool and several other sports, including volleyball.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t until the family moved to Carmel, Ind. before her junior year of high school that Bilquist finally committed to being a single-sport athlete. She went on to hold Indiana state high school records in the 50 and 100 yard free as well as the 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free relays. She followed that with a successful collegiate career at Cal and a third-place finish in the 100 meter backstroke at the 2016 Olympic Trials. Now, Bilquist is one of the pioneers of the International Swimming League (ISL).<\/p>\n

But this year, the 2019 U.S. national champion in the 100 meter backstroke will have her sights set on making the Olympic team that will compete in Tokyo this summer.<\/p>\n

Throughout all of her success, Bilquist\u2019s father has enjoyed watching his daughter\u2019s incredible perseverance. Through all of the highs and lows (and several injuries), Brent has considered the swim parent experience both fun and rewarding.<\/p>\n

He took the time to talk to Swimming World Magazine about 16-plus years of being on deck, cheering on his daughter!<\/p>\n

Swimming World:<\/span> <\/strong>How has the sport of swimming shaped Amy\u2019s character?
\nBrent Bilquist:<\/strong> <\/span>The combination of team fun and successes, along with individual goals in swimming plus the need to put in the work to be successful, really have added a balance to Amy\u2019s character. As a dad, I am very proud that the achievements that she gets most excited about and has always been so strong at, are the relay accomplishments where the success of the whole team depended on each person doing her best to make each other better.<\/p>\n

SW:<\/span><\/strong> What advice would you give to new swim parents?
\nBB:<\/span><\/strong> Well, 16-plus years of being a swim parent has taught me the easy answer to this question. Focus on making it fun for the swimmer and for you, and just be there to support your child\/children. The competition aspect is up to the swimmer, and it takes care of itself.<\/p>\n
