{"id":468648,"date":"2021-04-08T10:03:40","date_gmt":"2021-04-08T17:03:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=468648"},"modified":"2021-04-08T10:03:40","modified_gmt":"2021-04-08T17:03:40","slug":"paige-madden-nicolas-albiero-named-acc-swimmers-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/paige-madden-nicolas-albiero-named-acc-swimmers-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Paige Madden, Nicolas Albiero Named ACC Swimmers of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Paige Madden<\/strong> of Virginia and Louisville\u2019s <strong>Nicolas Albiero<\/strong> were named the ACC Swimmers of the Year <a href=\"https:\/\/theacc.com\/news\/2021\/4\/7\/swimming-diving-acc-announces-2020-21-swimming-and-diving-annual-awards.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wednesday in the conference\u2019s yearly awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>North Carolina\u2019s <strong>Aranza Vazquez<\/strong> and <strong>Anton Down-Jenkins<\/strong> were voted the women\u2019s and men\u2019s diver of the year, respectively. Their diving coach, <strong>Yaidel Gamboa,<\/strong> won both Diving Coach of the Year honors.<\/p>\n<p>The Freshman of the Year awards stayed in the state of Virginica, with the Cavaliers\u2019 <strong>Alex Walsh<\/strong> winning the women\u2019s award and <strong>Youssef Ramadan<\/strong> of Virginia Tech the men\u2019s. Both championship-winning coaches \u2013 <strong>Todd DeSorbo<\/strong> of Virginia and <strong>Arthur Albiero<\/strong> of Louisville \u2013 took home Swim Coach of the Year recognition.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/acc-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ACC Swimming Home Page<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The ACC Swimmers of the Year are both seniors who lifted team titles this season. Madden, a senior, was the Most Valuable Swimmer at the women\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2021-acc-womens-swimming-diving-championships-day-four-finals-live-madden-nails-1545-1650-uva-wins-team-title\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ACC championships for a second straight year<\/a>. After winning five ACC titles, she won the 200 free, 500 free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/paige-madden-dominates-1650-for-third-individual-win-of-ncaa-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">and 1,650 free at NCAAs<\/a> to help the Cavaliers to their first team crown. He went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/nick-albiero-etches-his-name-into-louisville-history-books-with-emotional-200-butterfy-ncaa-title\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">win the 200 butterfly at NCAAs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Vazquez was the Most Valuable Diver at Women\u2019s ACCs, the freshman from Mexico winning the 3-meter and platform events and earning silver in the 1-meter. She went on to pick up silver medals at NCAAs in the 1-meter and 3-meter events.<\/p>\n<p>Down-Jenkins, a junior from New Zealand, won the 1-meter and 3-meter events at ACCs. He finished fourth in the latter event at NCAAs. Down-Jenkins was named the Most Valuable Diver at Men\u2019s ACCs.<\/p>\n<p>The four ACC gold medals and six All-Americas earned by that diving duo makes Gamboa the diving coach of the year. He\u2019s just the second diving coach to win both awards in the same year, joining Miami\u2019s <strong>Randy Ableman<\/strong> in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Walsh started her NCAA career <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/alex-walsh-takes-dominant-200-im-win-in-individual-ncaa-debut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">by winning the 200 individual medley<\/a> and leading the Cavaliers to the team title. A four-time ACC champion, she joined Madden on the Cavaliers\u2019 winning 800 free relay.<\/p>\n<p>Ramadan was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/off-historic-accs-virginia-techs-youssef-ramadan-ready-for-first-ncaas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a revelation at the ACC Championships<\/a>, winning the 100 butterfly in one of the 10 fastest times ever and medaling in all three individual events. The native of Egypt earned All-America honors in four swims at NCAAs.<\/p>\n<p>DeSorbo piloted UVA to its third ACC championship in four years and 17th overall. He then added the crown jewel to the Cavaliers\u2019 recent dominance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/virginia-swimming-finally-gets-opportunity-to-prove-itself-on-national-stage-and-delivers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with the NCAA title triumph, the storied program\u2019s first<\/a>. UVA won six individual and relay titles at NCAAs. DeSorbo was also named the CSCAA Women\u2019s Swimming Coach of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Albiero <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/how-arthur-albiero-led-louisville-to-its-first-acc-mens-swimming-diving-title\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">capped a long rise to the top of the ACC<\/a> for the Cardinals with the first title in program history in a family affair with Nicolas.
